Read More	Elkader Register, IA, Thursday, November 5, 1925, pg. 6, cols. 3-4 CLAYTON COUNTY PIONEER ANSWERS FINAL SUMMONS Mrs. Sarah Ann Uriell Die At Age of Over 82 Years A veil of deep mourning was cast over this community Sunday morning, October 25, 1925, at six o'clock, when the sad news went forth that Mrs. Sarah Ann Uriell was dead. Deceased was the daughter of the late William and Catherine Schulte of Garnavillo, and spent her entire life in this community. She was 83 years, 6 months and 7 days of age at the time of her death. She died in her home in Elkader. For the past several years, she was in feeble health, and several months previous to her death she met with a painful accident from which she never recovered. She died fortified by the last sacraments of her church, of which, she was a devoted member. Her children were at her bedside as she passed to the beyond. Mrs. Uriell was conscious to the very last moment of her passing in death. Sarah Ann Schulte was born at Garnavillo on April 18th, 1843, at which place she lived her girlhood days. Her early education was at her home school after which she attended Sinsinawa College, Grant county, Wisconsin, to complete her studies of music. On October 6th, 1861, she was united in marriage to James Uriell, at Garnavillo. Mr. Uriell preceded her in death, Octtober 1st, 1892. At that time they lived in Read township. Eight children are left to mourn their loss: William, Ed, Joseph, of Elkader, Iowa; Mrs. J. J. Kann, Minat, North Dakota; Mrs. James Glennon, Rochester, Minnesota; Mrs. Cecilia Kelleher, Elkader, Iowa; Mrs. Catherine Regan, Elkader, Iowa; Also Sarah and Regina at home; together with twenty-five grand-children and eighteen grand-children. She is also survived by three brothers and one sister: Herman and Henry Schulte, of Garnavillo, Iowa; J. E. Schulte, Long Beach, California; and Mrs. Catherine Schmidtt, Postville, Iowa. The funeral obsequies were held on Wednesday morning, October 28th, at St. Joseph's church, Elkader. Burial was in Garnavillo cemetery by the side of her beloved husband. The pall bearers were: Frank Niemeyer, John Maley, Henry Pahlas, John Becker, Mike Miller, John Molumby, Thomas Donahoe. Tribute to Mrs. Uriell The services at St. Joseph's Catholic church was conducted by her pastor, Very Rev. J. P. Taken, who sang the Requiem High Mass and delivered the sermon. His remarks abounded in thought enshrined in beautiful language. The following is a very meager synopsis of the sermon delivered. It was a sketch of the Christian character of the deceased in which her humility, faith, and piety were faithfully and beautifully outlined. It abounded in gems of thought enshrined in language pure, simple, and choice. The delivery was earnest and dignified, and the full, resonant tones of the speaker's voice carried his pathetic utterances deep down into the hearts of his audience. "Death is Always Sad" "We weep over the decay of the infant bud of morality; the tears come unbidden to the eyes when the strong young man or young woman is cut down in the midst of the hopes and dreams of a bright future, nor can we repress our sorrow when the grave claims for its own the age of sear and yellow leaf." "But death has a grief greater, deeper, keener than all these--a grief which cuts into the heart like a sword thrust a grief that will abide with us during the whole days of our lives until death shall close our eyes and shall have locked up forever the hall of memory--a grief that comes to us but once in a life time it is that grief which overwhelms us at our mother's death. That grief is in our midst this morning; for it is a mother's silent form that lies before us, a mother's voice is hushed." "I would indeed be ungrateful did I not pay a tribute of respect and veneration to the memory of Mrs. Uriell. My acquaintance with her runs back for some years, and her memory shall be treasured among my fondest recollections." "She was humble, Humanity she regarded as the basic virtue of the Christian life. She sought not to be ranked with the great and wise, and in this she did well; for many a page of history which records the deeds of those whom the world calls great were better unwritten." "She chose the better part, she followed the example of our Lord. Who, when He had performed the most astounding miracle bade his disciples they should tell no man." "She followed the example of the saints, who loved to be unknown and reputed as nothing." "Her life would not attract any special attention or draw forth the applause of the world. Like a clear placid stream it modestly wended its way unobserved through the pleasant valleys beneath the shadows among the hills. It gave forth a beauty and fragrance peculiar to itself, like the modest flower blooming in some secluded spot." "To humility she added holiness. This was evidenced first of all by her simple faith; which saw not the clouds and mists with which questioning reason too often obscures the truths of religion, but gazed with keen and steady eye upon the most hidden mysteries of God and Christ." "She hesitated not; with her there was neither doubt nor shadow of doubt. She dwelt above the regions of sense and inhaled the pure, fresh breezes of Heaven. The sky of her soul was always clear; for faith with her was vision." "Another index of her holiness was her piety, fervent and childlike. God was her Father. In him she always confided. To him she always had recourse in her necessities, trials and afflictions. "In the days of her health she faithfully kept the third commandment in keeping sacred the Sunday and Holy Days. Her beads were her constant companion, and it was one of her afflictions before her death that she was unable to fully recite the prayers with her family. All her thoughts were absorbed with Christ in God." "Such a life could not but have its effect on her family. Her sons and daughters, taught at her knees in lisping infancy and rounded out with that fullness of knowledge and piety which through her generosity a Christian education has imported, are children of whom any mother might be proud. They, in return, gave their good mother every comfort possible during her last illness." "Her ending was quiet and calm; she slept the sleep of death in peace, and that loving memory will never leave her children. It was as if a beloved soul had brushed them with her wings in passing." "There is no other happiness or glory on earth for mothers greater than their children. What is heaven itself for them, if we are not there. We still occupy their thoughts." "There are moments of joy when she is at our side. When at peace with my God, I see her smiling from her voice, as we used to pray. When afar. In my prayer, I seem to hear I receive my dear Lord, she seems to follow Him into my poor heart, as she often received Him into her poor heart during her illness. This, unexcelled example for her children and we too." "My dear Christian people, God's judgements are secret. We know not the condition of the soul as it stands before the tribunal of His justice. But, if deep humility, lively faith and fervent piety; if the duties of a Christian wife and mother well performed are qualifications for a favorable judgement, we may rest assured that the soul of Mrs. Uriell is at this moment in her Father's house enjoying the sweets of the beatific vision." "Nevertheless, she was human, and all things human are weak. I ask you, therefore, to pray for Mrs. Uriell lest anything of the dust of human infirmity may have clung to her soul when it left its tenement of clay. Pray God to remember rather the good she has done than the imperfections of her mortal pilgramage and beg Him to admit her at once into that haven of rest which alone she sighed and labored."
