Monroe, May 2.--Barney Lathan, the 22-year old son of Sam Lathan, of Buford Township, was buried at Mt. Prospect today, and his funeral was largely attended, being conducted by his pastor, Rev. M. A. Osborne. The young man died in Monroe yesterday morning at 8 o'clock, and his passing was a particularly sad death. He would have graduated in the State High School at Boone, N. C., at the close of this session and had planned to enter Trinity next year. During the Christmas holidays the glands of the young man's throat became affected and enlarged daily until it ended a life full of hope and ambition, a young man that was the model of moral aptitude, strength of character and the friend of all. He was taken to Charlotte, where his tonsils were removed and physicians treated his complaint, but it baffled them and he could not arrest the ever-increasing malady, even advice from John's [sic] Hopkins failing to give relief. Four weeks ago he contracted measles, and this weakened his condition. His father was bringing him home in an automobile, the home being seven miles from Monroe, when the young man dropped dead at the home of his uncle, John Lathan, on Lancaster avenue, here. Barney Lathan realized that his end was near, and he stated to his father that he was ready to go and prepared for the future life, but it was his great desire to get home for his death. The fact that he did not obtain his desires in this respect added to the sorrow of his loved ones, who were with him when he died. Charlotte Observer May 3, 1917 Page 13
