The deceased had been in ill-health for several weeks and his death was not unexpected. The late Mr. Buchanan was born in Sligo, Ireland, his parents coming to Canada while he was a mere boy. Read More	Laurel: Mr. James Buchanan, an old resident of this section, passed away at his home on lot 9, con. 5, Amaranth, on Sunday, August 21st, at the ripe age of 88 years. The deceased had been in ill-health for several weeks and his death was not unexpected. The late Mr. Buchanan was born in Sligo, Ireland, his parents coming to Canada while he was a mere boy. The family settled in the neighborhood of Brockville, but the subject of this sketch moved to Amaranth shortly after his marriage 53 years ago. He and his young wife settled on lot 9, con. 5, where they have since resided. Much of Amaranth was at that time unsettled and there was comparatively few cleared farms in the township. Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan shared in the struggles, hardships and unceasing toil that were the common lot of the early settlers. By dint and patient industry and frugality they in time cleared up their farm and made themselves and family a comfortable home in what is now a fine section of agricultural country. The late Mr. Buchanan was a quiet, hardworking man, who enjoyed the respect and good-will of the neighborhood. His death is generally regretted and the sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved wife and family. He is survived by a widow, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Hamilton, and a family of two sons and four daughters. The latter are Mrs. A. Blackwell, Toronto; Mrs. George Young, Mrs. Thos. Johnston and Robert Buchanan, of Amaranth, and John and Miss Mary Buchanan on the homestead. There are also two grandchildren, Mrs. S. Rainbow, now living in Toronto, and Miss Lizzie Dennison, who have lived with their grandparents, since the death of their mother many years ago. Altogether there are twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild living. The late Mr. Buchanan was an uncle of Mrs. W. H. Lambe, Orangeville; Mrs. J. Garbutt, Bowling Green; Mrs. R. Hamilton, Toronto; Mrs. W. Sickling, Laurel; Mrs. W. McCabe, Shelburne; Mrs. James White, Whittington, and Messrs. Robert, Samuel, and E. Hamilton, of Laurel. The funeral was held to Laurel cemetery on Tuesday of last week, Revs. J. R. Bell and T. R. White conducting the services.
