Description	:	James settled in the Jones Plantation near his father, 1/2 mile south of South China Village, on the farm later known as the "Esq. Stewart" place. He was first constable and collector of the town (1796) He married 30 Sept 1779 Rhoda Weeks (Falmouth VR). Her date of birth is unknown but she died 30 Jan 1831 age 75. In December 1775, he enlisted as a private soldier in the war of the revolution, against the common enemy upon the continental establishment for the period of one year in Capt. Peters Company and Col. Learned's regiment of the Mass troops online.... Peters Company and Col. Learned's regiment of the Mass troops online. This period he fully served out and was verbally but honorably discharged at Peaks Hill, December 1776. After the evacuation of the British troops at Boston, he marched to New York where he was transferred to a corp of artificers, commanded by Col. Brewer, where he remained until discharged. He was at the Battle of White Plains and afterwards entered on board the continental ship Warren of thirty two guns, commanded by John B Hopkins, Esq. He served aboard the ship about four months, in the capacity of midshipman. (Rev War pension record #536966). In 1818 he applied for a pension and stated that his assets were as follows:An old house not exceeding twenty dollars; a house in common with two others, my third does not exceed fourteen dollars; two cows value of thirty five dollars; one yearling heifer value sever dollars; six sheep value of twelve dollars; one swine value eight dollars; furniture, except necessary bedding, value fifteen dollars, one old bible value 25 cents; an old axe value 25 cents; debts due me that may be collected twenty dollars and I owe about 20. He stated his income from the above property did not exceed ten dollars per year and he had no other income from property, trade of profession. (Rev War pension record).
