Read More	The Edgar Sun (Edgar, NE) Fri, Mar 21, 1941 - pg. 1 James Chance James Chance, son of Mr. and Mrs. Zachariah Chance, was born March 28, 1862, near Decatur, Illinois, and departed this life March 12, 1941 at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 14 days. He grew to manhood near Decatur and Macon, Illinois. His father passed to the Great Beyond when James was only ten years of age and after a year he made his home with a cousin, Elizah Walker, until he grew to manhood. He was married to Alice Whitworth January 6, 1885, at a double wedding with his wife's sister and husband at the home of her parents near Moweaqua, Illinois. To this union were born five children, four daughters and one son, Mrs. Carrie Adams. of Edgar, Mrs. Mary Sconce of Ohiowa, Mrs. Nelle O'Connell of Sterling, Colorado, and James Arthur Chance of Edgar. A daughter, Mrs. Ella Saum, preceded him in death, January 27, 1922. He and his wife resided for eight years in and around Macon, Illinois. In the fall of 1892 he moved with his family to Edgar residing in Edgar except in October, 1899, he moved his family and household goods back to Illinois locating in the town of Assumption where his relative lived, with whom he had made his home after his father's death. He did not seem to like Illinois as well he had thought so he and his wife, after a two months' stay decided to return to Nebraska residing in Edgar some 48 years, He united with the Methodist Church in the fall of 1893 during Evangelistic meetings and ever since has been a very faithful member. He also took much interest in the building of the basement of the church both financially and with labor and at other times when labor was needed. He has been a member of the Masonic Order for 49 years. He was a faithful helper while the Masonic Lodge room was being refinished. He acted as councilman of Edgar at one time. Mr. Chance was a very devoted husband and father, a good neighbor and beloved by his fellowmen in the community where he resided. His life was filled with a desire to extend a helping hand to his family, friends and neighbors. He leaves to mourn his going, his devoted wife, his three daughters and son, also four granddaughters, Mary Louise, Kathryn Alice and Betty Jean O'Connell and Mrs. Dorothy Bell, four grandsons, Robert E, O'Connell, Duane G. Adams, James R. Chance, and Cleatus E. Saum, also two great grandchildren, Marvin and Ruth Ann Saum, one sister, Mrs. Julia Horner of Los Angeles, California, and one half brother, G. E. Housman of Decatur, Illinois, besides other relatives and a host of friends. Mr. Chance had been in poor health for almost three years and confined to his home for the past six month, taking to his bed on Saturday before his death. His many friends and close neighbors will remember him long for his many deeds of kindness and expressions of sincerity of heart. Funeral services were held from the Edgar Methodist Church Sunday, March 16, 1941, at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Raymond Rush in charge. A male quartette composed of Messrs. J. G. Walley, J. Rob't. Olseene, Ed. Cushing, and Cecil Strawser sang "Beautiful Land," "Abide With Me" and "Going Down the Valley." Mrs. Lydia Phelps was at the piano. The floral offerings were beautiful. Pallbearers were C. H. Merrill, W. H. Reid, A. H. Swanson, Robt. Shuck, W. R. Nicholls, B. G. Rydholm, F. A. Westering and R. W. Sconce. The Masons of Edgar Lodge had charge of the committal services at the church and grave. Rev. Rush pronounced the benediction. Interment was made in the Edgar cemetery (sic).
