Jan 1, 1943- Page 1 Alice Chance, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Whitworth, was born near Moweaqua, Illinois, January 3, 1863 and departed this life December 27, 1942, at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 24 days. She grew to womanhood in and around Moweaqua, Illinois, and was married to James Chance January 6, 1885, at a double wedding with her sister and husband at the home of her parents near Moweaqua, Illinois. To this union were born five children, four daughters and one son Mrs. Carrie Adams and James Arthur Chance of Edgar, Nebraska; Mrs. Mary Sconce of Ohiowa, Nebraska; Mrs. Nellie O'Connell of Sterling Colorado; and Mrs. Ella Saum. Her husband and daughter, Ella preceded her in death. Mr. and Mrs. Chance resided for eight years in and around Macon, Illinois. In the fall of 1892 they moved with their family to Edgar and have resided here ever since, except for a time in the fall of 1899 when they moved back to Illinois, but after two months they decided to return and she has lived here for 50 years. She united with the Methodist Church in the fall of 1893, during evangelistic meetings and ever since has been a very faithful member. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge. Mrs. Chance was a very devoted wife and mother, also a good neighbor, beloved by her many friends in the community where she lived. She leaves to mourn her going her three daughters and one son, also four granddaughters, Mary Louise, Kathryn Alice and Betty Jean O'Connell and Mrs. Dorothy Bell; four grandsons Robert E. O'Connell, Duane C. Adams, James R. Chance and Cleatus E. Saum; also three great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Mrs. Clara Landrum and Sarah Lamb preceded her in death. Mrs. Chance had been in good health since her husband's death almost two years ago and her passing was very sudden. Her many friends and neighbors will remember her long for her many deeds of kindness and expressions of sincerity of heart. "They call it death, when the angel comes To open the door of life, The door that opens and shuts us in From the world's toil and strife; When the boon of rest come to weary souls When the burden of care is lost, When the harbor of heaven welcomes those Over the world's sea tempest tossed, Thank God, for the door--by whatever name, That awaits at the end of the road, For it swings widely to let us in To the Paradise of God." Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 30, 1942, at 2:00, at the Edgar Methodist church (sic) with Rev. S. W. Longacre in charge. Mrs. L. B. Dalton, Mrs. Robert Jackson, M. E. Cushing and Robert Jackson sang "There'll Be No Night There," "There'll Be No Tears in Paradise" and "Going Down the Valley." Mrs. Lydia Phelps was at the piano. Flower ladies were Mrs. Grace Clack, Mrs. F. M. Harbaugh and Mrs. R. Paddack. Pallbearers were: W. H. Reid, B. G. Rydholm, C. H. Merrill, Ralph Sconce, J. G. Walley and C. A. Scism.
