Read More	James Christopher Anderton -- born January 19, 1919 to Roland Crowder Anderton and Bertha Virginia White in Mathews County, VA. He was named after his two grandfathers, James B. White and Christopher Columbus Anderton, and was called "James" by his older relatives. His brother and sister called him "Bubber" as Elizabeth couldn't say "Brother" when she was small, and eventually all his cousins and friends called him "Bubber", too. The nickname seemed to go perfectly with his cherubic face. Bubber had brown eyes, like his daddy. He was a shy person, both as a child and as a man, and was tall like his brother (6'1"), but a bit overweight -- enough so that as a child I called him "Big Bubber". Bubber was raised by his maternal aunt, Ruby "Arboo" White Shinault and her husband, Bud. They lived at "Sunset Villa" on East River, near Mathews Court House. Bubber and his brother Roland lived seven miles apart so they did not get to see each other often -- just on an occasional weekend and holidays -- until they attended the same high school, Lee Jackson, at Mathews Courthouse. And they saw Elizabeth, their sister, even less often. She would come up from North Carolina during the summer months and at Christmastime. When they saw her though, they did enough mischief to her to last the remainder of the year! She was blamed for setting a field afire, because they had sent her to the house for matches; she had lighted firecrackers put in her hands, was teased constantly and other such nonsense. Both brothers were hopeless teases. Bubber was always telling me he had cooked up a big pot of cabbage just for me (he knew I detested cabbage). Another favorite joke was calling me to the telephone -- of course, no one was ever there which I, being a sensitive teenager, thought was kind of cruel -- but I never learned. I always took off running to the phone, just in case -- much to his delight. During the summers when he was growing up, cousin Floyd White, and later Floyd's younger brother Jimmie, would spend those summer months at Sunset Villa with Arboo, Bud and Bubber. Jimmie and Bubber remained close friends into adulthood and would have an especially wonderful time together at the famed Fourth of July picnics. Bubber enlisted in the United States Army in 1941 and served throughout World War II. His company followed that of General Patton from North Africa up through Italy. He sent Arboo a delicate, hand carved cameo from Sicily, which my mother has since had set into a pinky ring for me. After the war, he was employed as a bomb assembler by the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown until his early retirement due to ill health. Like his mother and brother before him, he developed diabetes and the complications that often accompany it. Bubber never married and lived with Arboo at their home, purchased in 1948 at Mathews Court House after Sunset Villa was sold, until her death on June 22, 1973 at age 88. Every spring he would plow and plant a huge garden behind the house, the fruits of which kept Arboo busy every summer canning and freezing. We would always carry a feast of fresh vegetables back to Wilson after a visit. For most of his adult years, he served on the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department. In 1977, when he became too ill to live alone, he went to Wilson, North Carolina to be cared for by his sister, Elizabeth (my mother). He died there on June 22, 1978 -- five years to the day after Arboo's death – only 59 years old. He was brought back to Mathews and buried in Providence Cemetery with his brother and parents. Bubber belonged to the Mobjack IOOF Lodge #273, and along with Arboo, attended the Westville Christian Church in Mathews.
