Description	:	Bertha Virginia White – my biological grandmother (maternal) – born February 1, 1890 in Mathews County. She was a tiny lady, like her mother, only 4' 11", much shorter than her older sisters, Ruby and Lilly who were 5'7" and 5'5" respectively. On March 20, 1913, Bertha married Roland Crowder Anderton, her third cousin who was raised right down the road (North River Road). Roland died as a very young man in 1922, leaving Bertha with three small children. The circumstances of his death and Bertha's subsequent illness and death are discussed in detail in the story attached to Roland. I have always felt a special kinship with Bertha, almost as if she were watching over me, as I'm sure she did with her own little girl, my mother who was only six years old when Bertha died. Mama has only a shadowy memory of her. Perhaps this feeling I have is due to the sadness which I feel must have permeated her life after the loss of her young husband and the difficulties she must have faced, raising those three children alone. Then, finally, her own senseless death just five years later from diabetes which might have been prevented just a year or two later when the administration of insulin was better understood. How I wish to have known her. Tears still come to my eyes whenever I think of her. There's a story here – about Bertha and Roland and the circumstances at the ends of their lives – I only wish that I were that kind of writer so that I could capture its poignancy – then all of you would cry too.
