This was where his mother, Bertha, and her sisters and brothers were raised. On September 6, 1937, he attended a birthday party for Lorraine Hill (who later married Rob Roy Roane) and there met his future bride, Nellie Mae Outten. Nellie Mae had recently moved to Mathews from the Eastern Shore with her parents, Frank Ernest Outten and Mary Rebecca Abbott. Roland sent her a ring by steamer when she was away at Norfolk Business College and on September 6, 1939, the second anniversary of their meeting, they were married. They were the parents of Tommy and Laurel, my cousins mentioned in the Foreword. For the first nine months of marriage, Roland and Nellie Mae lived with her parents, before moving into the Bohannon house bought by Roland, Sr. in 1921. The house had been rented out to William Crockett since Bertha's death as the children were being raised in other homes, and was in a state of disrepair. Nevertheless, Roland and Nellie Mae bought his brother and sister's share of the property in 1942 and the house was theirs. At first, only two rooms of the seven-room house were livable. Many hours were spent "fixing up" -- building a platform for a sink under the pump in the kitchen, cleaning, painting, whitewashing -- it wasn't for several years, though, that they were able to install indoor plumbing and put a bathroom where the pantry had been. However, to this day, the outhouse (or "cute little house", as our family lovingly calls them) still stands, freshly painted -- just in case! During the first few years of their marriage, Roland held various jobs such as working for Miles Distributing Company and shucking oysters. Eventually they bought the stock of a general store at Big Stump (near Miles Post Office). Then he got a grand opportunity to work on a tugboat while Nellie Mae ran the store. Barely two weeks later, in March of 1942 (just before I was born), there was a terrible rainstorm and Roland slipped on the boat deck and got his left hand caught in a mooring gear. Somehow he mustered the strength to pull his arm loose, but lost most of the hand -- only his little finger remained. They wouldn't tell Mama about his accident until after my birth -- so she wouldn't worry. After a long slow recovery, he confined his business to the store. He was amazingly unhandicapped -- boy, what he could do with that little finger. One task he did have trouble with though was tying his shoes. In 1955, he moved his stock from Miles to Bohannon after buying a store there from Jack Clements. This store was located (and still is) on the far side of the Post Office, which was just by the end of his lane. His father's store had actually been on Anderton Property at the end of the lane. That older building itself was purchased by Jack Clements in the 1940's and then moved across the road where Jack ran an appliance business for many years. Our cousin, Ralph Anderton, now owns the store and rents it out as a storage unit. Sometime in the late 1940's, Roland was driving a truck and found that he was having difficulty reading road signs. An eye examination revealed that he had developed diabetes, the same disease that had resulted in his mother's death. During the rest of his life, he suffered many complications of diabetes until he died on August 11, 1967, just a few weeks before his 50th birthday, and two months before the birth of his first grandchild. Uncle Roland and Aunt Nellie Mae alternately attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church and Oak Grove Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Roland was elected to the Mathews County Board of Supervisors, representing the Westville Magisterial District from 1958 to 1964. He was a member of Oriental Masonic Lodge No. 20 and Mobjack Lodge No. 273, IOOF and Encampment No. 20, both of Mobjack.
