Our of the best known and most highly esteemed residents of the Krambach district, in the person of Mr. James Cowan, of Firefly, passed away at his home on Monday afternoon, aged 83 years. The late Mr. Cowan had not enjoyed good health for some time. About six months ago he suffered a big loss in the death of his wife, and since then his health gradually became worse. Except for a period of eight or nine years when he lived in his own home in Victoria Street, Taree, he spent the whole of his married life of 48 years on his farm at Firefly. He is survived by four sons and four daughters, viz., Constable J. S. Cowan (Newtown), Messrs. Allan Leslie and Hector Thos. Cowan (Firefly), Keith Cowan (at home), Mrs. R. Croker (Queanbeyan), Mrs. A. Dane (wife of the manager of the E.S. and A. Bank at Tweed Heads), Mrs. Alf. Woodward (Nabiac), and Miss Christina Cowan (at home). The only surviving member of his own family is a sister Mrs. A. Newell, of Firefly. At 2 p.m. on Tuesday a short service was conducted at the home, and then the remains were laid to rest beside those of his wife in the Krambach cemetery. Rev. M. C. Ramsay conducted the services and Mr. W. T. Howard carried out the funeral arrangements. A more extended notice regarding the late Mr. Cowan will appear in our next issue. The Northern Champion (Taree, NSW : 1913 - 1954) Wed 11 Dec 1940, Page 2, OBITUARY In our last issue we briefly recorded the death of Mr. James Cowan, of "Glencoe" Firefly, who passed away at his home on Monday afternoon at the advanced age of 87. Some three years ago he had a fall at his home, as a result of which he spent two months in a private hospital in Taree. His wife passed away last May, and since then his health had been failing, and a couple of weeks before the end came the members of the family were called home. In the last six months illness he was nursed by his daughter, Miss Christina Cowan. Deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Colin Cowan, Scottish folk who settled on the Hunter in the early days. The subject of this notice was born at Miller's Forest in 1853 the year of a big flood which washed over their property. Later on, the family moved in Monkerai, between Stroud and Gloucester, and as a youth the subject of this notice conveyed the mail on portion of the run between Stroud and Tinonee. On reaching the end of his run he used to pass the mails on to Mr. Robert Easton (still living at Burrell Creek), who conveyed them the balance of the journey. When about 29 years of age deceased selected his property at Firefly. Forty-eight years ago, he was married at Upper Myall, by the late Rev. S. P. Stewart, to Miss Mary Matilda Newell, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Newell, of Upper Myall. All their married life was spent on the Firefly property, with the exception of eight or nine years in Taree. Mr. Cowan came to Taree 18 years ago with the intention of living in retirement in his own home in Victoria Street, but his vigorous, nature rebelled against an idle life, and he decided to return to the farm, in which he took an active interest until his accident necessitated a less active life. The late Mr. Cowan specialised in the breeding of beef cattle, and had the reputation of being one of the most reliable judges of beef and fat cattle on the Central Coast. Although he did not seek public honours; he was a man who always evinced a keen and intelligent interest in all worthwhile organisations. He was a faithful member of the Free Presbyterian Church, and for many years the services of this denomination were conducted in his home, to which friends and neighbours always received a hearty welcome. He was scrupulously honest and fair in all his business dealings, while in private life he won numerous friends because of his genial, kindly nature and sympathetic understanding of the view point of others. His demise removes one of the most respected and honoured residents of the Upper Wallamba, and one whose long and useful life played no small part in the development of the locality in which he made his home. He is survived by four sons and four daughters, namely Constable Jas Stewart Cowan (Newtown), Messrs. Allan Leslie, Hector Thos., and Keith Norman Cowan (all of Firefly), Mrs. Robert Croker (Canberra), Mrs. Dane (wife of Mr. Athol Dane, manager of the E.S. and A. Bank, Tweed Heads), Mrs. Alf. Woodward (Nabiac), and Miss Christina Cowan (at home). The only surviving member of deceased's own family is a sister, Mrs. A. Newell, of Firefly. Three brothers - Murdoch Cowan (Nabiac), Donald and Archibald Cowan, (of the Far North Coast) and one sister, Mrs. Jos. Newell, of Cocumbark, predeceased him. The funeral services on Tuesday, afternoon were conducted by .Rev. M. C. Ramsay, assisted by Rev. J F. Fullerton. At the service at the home, Psalm 100 was sung, it being Mr Cowan's favourite Psalm, and during the last days of his life he often repeated it. Mr. Fullerton led in prayer, and Mr. Ramsay spoke, briefly words of comfort. At the graveside in the Krambach cemetery, Mr. Ramsay gave an address in the presence of a large gathering. In the course of his remarks, he spoke of the beauties of the Christian religion, especially the completeness of Christ 's redemptive work and its perpetual efficacy, and the fulness of blessedness which comes at death to the souls of God's people. Reference was made to the indefiniteness of the views of many respecting death and the hereafter, whereas the Scriptures give most definite information, on these subjects. An important part of the late Mr. Cowan 's heritage was the Truths of God 's Word, which were imparted to him by his parents, accompanied, no doubt, by their prayers. That precious heritage had been richly blessed to him, for he gave, by life and word clear evidence of personal faith in the Lord Jesus. The service held in Mr. Cowan's home from time to time were a source of evident delight to him and he rejoiced to see his family and neighbours' neighbours meeting to worship God. Mr Cowan had been nurtured in what is sometimes called the old theology, but it is ever new, for God does not change. Mr. Cowan's interest in the wellbeing of his family was undoubted, and it is hoped that the Cowan families from generation to generation will be known for their loyalty to the Scriptures as the unerring Word of God, and will constantly show their appreciation of the Lord Jesus. His Word, His Day and His people. The death of Mrs. Cowan, just seven months ago, and now the decease of Mr. Cowan, may give to the family a feeling of desolation, but God, is ever the sufficiency of His people. He never fails them, That God Who, in all generations, has been the unfailing helper of His people, still gives all necessary light, strength; guidance and comfort to those who trust Him.
