Much sympathy will be extended to Mr. James Cowan and family, of Firefly, in the death of his wife and their mother, which took place in a Private Hospital, at Taree, on Friday afternoon last. Having previously been blessed by good health, she became ill at her home a fortnight or so before, and was taken to hospital some 10 days before the end came, heart trouble being the cause. The late. Mrs. Cowan was 68 years of age, and was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Newell, who lived on the Upper Myall. About 47 years ago she was married to Mr. James Cowan and they went to live on the latter's property at Firefly, where they established a fine holding and reared a family of which the district is proud. There they lived until about 18 or 19 years ago, when Mr. and Mrs. Cowan decided to take up residence in Taree. After a residence of eight or nine years, they tired of town life and some 10 years ago decided to return to the old homestead and reside amongst their numerous friends at Firefly. There they lived in happiness, with some members of their family at home and others in the locality. The late Mrs. Cowan was one of those fine old rural reared souls whose hospitality and kindness knew no bounds. In the days of the last war, she was an indefatigable worker for the Red Cross and on the district roads from Firefly she and her old black pony and sulky were familiar as she proceeded to Red Cross meetings. In fact, she was made the recipient of a Red Cross diploma for her work. In the circle of her acquaintances the late Mrs. Cowan was loved and honored for her home life, her good works, her kindly actions and charitable nature. She is survived by her husband, who is 83 years of age and for some time had not been enjoying good health. Surviving members of the family are: Constable James Stewart Cowan (Newtown), Messrs. Allan Leslie and Hector Thomas Cowan (settlers in the Firefly district) and Mr. Keith Cowan (at home); Mrs. R. Croker (Queanbeyan), Mrs. Athol Dane (whose husband is manager of the E.S. and A Bank at Tweed Heads), Mrs. Alf. Woodward (Nabiac), and Nurse Christina Cowan (Purfleet). One brother, Mr. J William Newell, of Brown's' Creek, hear Firefly, survives, and a brother, John Thomas, of Upper Myall, predeceased his sister. Surviving sisters of deceased are: Mrs. Humphries (Bulahdelah), and Mrs. Fred Horner (Lewisham). Deceased sisters are: Mrs. R. Carey (Bunyah) and Mrs. Maher (Ramsgate). The funeral took place on Sunday. A service was held In the Presbyterian Church at Krambach at % being conducted by the Rev. M. C. Ramsay, M_A. (Free Presbyterian minister at Taree), and at 2.30 the cortege moved to the Krambach cemetery, where the interment took place, the Rev. Ramsay completing the sacred service. The cortege was one of the largest seen in the Krambach district, testimony to the high esteem in which the late Mrs. Cowan was held by all classes of the community. A nice wreath was sent along by the Newtown Police Sports Club. In connection with the late Mrs. Cowan, the Rev. Ramsay occasionally held a week-night service at her home, at which members of the Free Presbyterian Church assembled. The Wingham Chronicle and Manning River Observer (NSW: 1898 - 1954) Fri 31 May 1940, Pg 7 ========== Late Mrs. Cowan FUNERAL SERVICE The funeral of the late Mrs. James Cowan, of Firefly, was largely attended, and there were many beautiful wreaths. In the Krambach church Rev. M.C Ramsay, M.A., conducted Divine service, when portion from the Old and New Testaments were read and prayers were offered for the bereaved, and especially for the husband, who is incapacitated as the result of an accident which occurred some years ago. In his address the preacher linked Psalm 23 to the 7th Chapter of Revelations, and declared that in all ages of the world's history, God's people lived and died in faith, knowing God as their sufficiency in life, in death and throughout eternity. Reference was made to the evidences Mrs. Cowan had given of her personal faith in the lord Jesus, and of all which she was, by Divine goodness, to her family and to others. From the church the cortege proceeded to the Krambach cemetery, where a very great number had gathered to show their regard for the late Mrs. Cowan and to express their sympathy with the bereaved relatives. At the graveside, in addition to the reading of the Scriptures, and the offering of prayer, the preacher ' spoke of the helpful character of the early religious training received by the late Mrs. Cowan, and deplored the importation of so much lightness into the religion of our day with its neglect of the Bible and of the Lord's Day, and the inevitable shallowness of the religious thinking of many people. In contrast with this, reference was made to Mrs. Cowan's delight in the week evening services which were held in her home during the past two years, and her desire that others should hear the Divine message of the Scriptures. Also, reference was made to the poignancy, of human sorrow, but stress was laid on the resources of God 's comforting grace, and it was asserted that, in all ages, God's grace has been proved to be sufficient to His people in all their trials. Consequently, the bereaved husband in his illness and the children would receive, if they looked to the Lord Jesus, all necessary light, strength, guidance, comfort and blessing. The address closed with a declaration of that glorious and comforting truth revealed so plainly in God's word that at death the souls of believers pass immediately into the presence of their Lord in glory, so that, in the words of Scripture, "To be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord." (II. Cor. 5:8). Amongst the many beautiful floral tokens were, tributes from Newtown Police Club, Church of England Ladies' Guild at Nabiac, and Matron Henderson.
