HILDA WOODWARD A Tribute (By A Friend) When it became known to a wide circle of friends throughout the Wallamba and the adjacent districts that Ada, the wife of Mr. Alfred E. Woodward, of Nabiac, had passed on to the undiscovered country, profound regret was felt on all sides and by all sections of the community at the loss of a sincere friend and a citizen whose gentle manner and quiet disposition had endeared her to all. Born on the Upper River - the daughter of a pioneering family — she spent her life among the beautiful hills and valleys of her native district and while her earthly, pilgrimage fell far short of the allotted span, she served her generation in full measure according to her strength — service characterised by devotion to her home and friends, her church and the community. In deed her place in the activities of her church will be difficult to fill and the Free Presbyterian congregation of this district becomes the poorer by the loss of a staunch adherent and active member. Every local institution which exists for the welfare of the citizens claimed not only her interest, but her practical support until failing health began to take its toll of her activities. Throughout the stresses of the second World War she associated herself whole-heartedly with the work of the local branches of the Australian Comforts Fund and of the Red Cross Society, and rendered outstanding service to both. In common with millions of mothers of the Empire, she carried on the daily round of duty with courage and patience, and unswerving faith in our cause and in our race, and undismayed by forebodings of what the morrow might bring from fields where arrows of death were on the wing. When the storm passed we all rejoiced she was here to receive her son safe and sound in mind and in body and in spirit, as she doubtless prayed he might return to her. Her work on the local Auxiliary of the MRD Hospital and on the Ladles Committee of the WDA & H Association, was equally unselfish and thorough, and she is remembered by fellow members for her great comradeship throughout the years and while the tender grace of the days that are sped can never comeback, she yet continues to live in the hearts she has left behind. Now after life's fitful fever she sleeps well beneath the wondrous glory of the everlasting stars, lulled by the songs of birds and of the winds among other children of pioneers, sleeps till the day breaks and the shadows of night flee away. Warm summer sun shine friendly here. Warm summer breeze blow softly here, Green sod above lie light, lie light, Goodnight dear heart, goodnight, goodnight. Farewell soft-voiced and gentle companion of the highway, whom we loved long since and lost awhile.
