More than 1,000 friends, Masonic brothers and fellow townsmen yesterday afternoon paid their last tribute to James E. Bromwell, prominent Marion attorney and Mason, at funeral services held at the Methodist church in Marion. Mr. Bromwell died in an Iowa City hospital Wednesday. Many beautiful floral tributes added to the honor paid his memory. Opening the service, Mrs. Mary Preston Beaven and Mrs. Ruth Ebling Massey of Cedar Rapids sang "Peace, Perfect Peace," by Caldbeck. They were accompanied at the pipe organ by Mrs. Ethel Parmalee Livingston, also of Cedar Rapids. Dr. James P. Van Horn, president of Upper Iowa university at Fayette and a life-long friend of Mr. Bromwell, read the scripture lesson. After his prayer, the Methodist male quartet, composed of G.H. Clark, J.J. Booth, H.F. Lockwood and H.L. Doyle, sang a Masonic arrangment of "Nearer, My God, to Thee," after which the Rev. William C. Perdew, pastor of the Methodist church, read the obituary, closing with a favorite poem of Mr. Bromwell's, "Crossing the Bar" by Tennyson. Baker Delivers Sermon. The Rev. Earle A. Baker of Mount Vernon, superintendent of the Davenport district of the Methodist church, preached the sermon, using as his text the words of St. Paul, written during his exile, to Timothy, "I have fought a good fight; I have finished the course; I have kept the faith; hencheforth[sic] there is laid up for me a crown." The Rev Mr. Baker likened the life of his friend to an oratorio, with grand cadences. He spoke of the many outstanding characteristics of Mr. Bromwell, his friendliness, and his life as an example of the poem, "Let Me Live in a House By the Side of the Road," by Sam Walter Foss. Mr Baker spoke of Mr. Bromwell's intense patriotism and of his exceptional gift of oratory, manifest especially when he spoke on subjects pertaining to patriotism. The appealing note of deep sentiment in his nature caused him to be often called on to make presentations in fraternal circles. The speaker quoted Bryant's last stanza of "Thanatopsis" and Browning's poem, "Thy Soul in God Stand Sure" He closed his sermon in accordance with the request of Mr Bromwell, reading James Whitcomb Riley's poem, "Away" Masons Take Part. Mrs. Beaven and Mrs. Massey sang "Now the Day Is Over," by Joseph Barnby, after which Dr C. A. Bradley gave the Masonic funeral oration for Marion lodge No. 6 A.F and A.M., which was in charge of the service. Patmos Commandery No. 27, Knights Templar, acted as escort. The Masonic orders to which Mr. Bromwell belonged, Marion lodge No. 6, A.F. and A.M.; Marion chapter No. 10, R.A.M.; Patmos Commandery No. 27, Knights Templar; Marion chapter No. 183, O.E.S., attended in a body, as did also Apollo Commandery of Cedar Rapids and the Entre Nous club of Marion. Many members of the Linn County Bar association were also present. Carl W Reed of Cresco; grand commander Knight Templars of Iowa, and George Wybrandt of Dubuque, past grand commander of Knights Templar of Iowa, attended the service. Acting as pall bearers were Lee Fitzgerald, George R. Barnoske, P C Lassen, T J Davis, P O Clark and W G Buck, all past commanders of Patmos Commandery.
