James Davis (20244351) Suggested edit: James E. Davis. The news of the death of James E. Davis at his home in south east Murray, Christmas evening, caused a wave of sadness over our town. Although his death had been hourly expected, It was a shock to the community. James E. Davis was born In Marshall county, Ill., Dec 30, 1853, and died at 9:30 P. M., Dec. 25, 1926. aged 72 years, 11 months and 25 days. In the spring of 1855, he moved with his parents John E., and M. J. Davis to Clarke county, Iowa, where he has resided until his death. On June 12, 1873, he was united in marriage to Adeline Johnson. To his union three children were born: Martha J., Laura Myrtle and Zoa Bell. Myrtle and Zoa preceded their father to the great beyond. He had been a sufferer from diabetes for several years and for the last four years he has been unable to do any hard work. Since last June he has been confined to the house and for three months he has been confined to his bed. Although his suffering at times was almost more than he could bear, he endured it with patience and fortitude. All was done that loving hands, medical skill and constant care could do, but to no avail. He united with the Baptist church at Lacelle in 1875. After moving to Murray, he with his wife placed their membership in the Christian church of Murray. He was a faithful attendant until his health failed him. He remained true to his faith In Christ until his death. He was one of the best loved citizens of the town. He was honorable in his dealings with others, well known for his loyalty to his friends and neighbors, always ready to lend a helping hand. Those who knew him were his friends. He leaves to mourn his going his faithful wife, one daughter, Mrs. Martha Roberts and her husband, Wm. Roberts of Ottumwa, Iowa, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Also four brothers, B.H. of Miller, S. D., 0. F. of Osceola, Iowa: M. E. of Murray, Iowa, and F. M. of Leon, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Whitehead of Hobart, Okla., and Mrs. M. Z. Roberts of Bell, Cal. Many other relatives and a host of friends. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a kind neighbor and friend. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow. Services were held at the Church of Christ in Murray, conducted by Rev. Earl B Clark. Interment was made in the Murray cemetery.
