A telegram received yesterday afternoon from Dr. Davis at St. Louis, brought the sad news that James E. Neal had died as the result of the operation for cancer that he went to St. Louis to have performed. Dr. Davis arrived with the remains this morning and they were sent to his home near Bolton. Mr. Neal was a prosperous and well known farmer who has been a resident of this county almost from it's first settlement. The cancer which caused his death appeared seven years ago and the present operation was the seventh which Mr. Neal has undergone, the last six being performed by the same surgeon. Dr. Emory Lamphear, formerly of Kansas City. These operations, while not eradicating the cancer, doubtless prolonged Mr. Neal's life. It was hardly hoped that Mr. Neal would survive this operation, for he was already much debilitated and the cancer involved a large portion of the right side of the face including the ear, which had to be removed. It was a desperate chance and Mr. Neal was fully aware of it and took the chance knowing that otherwise he had but a few weeks to live. The operation was performed at the Missouri Baptist Sanitarium at St. Louis, Tuesday afternoon and lasted about one hour. Mr. Neal never recovered consciousness and died about one hour later. He was 59 years of age and leaves a wife and six children, three daughters being grown and two of them married. The funeral will take place from his late residence near Bolton at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Mr. Neal was a member of the A.O.U.W. lodge of this city and doubtless a delegation from the lodge will attend the funeral.
