Carty, 80, of Woodland, died Oct. 24, 2001, at Southwest Washington Medical Center [Vancouver, WA]. He was born Nov. 11, 1920, in Ridgefield, Wash., and graduated from Ridgefield High School in 1938. He graduated from Washington State University in 1949, and received his law degree from Duke University in 1952. He lived in Clark County until 1980, when he moved to Arizona for four years. He lived in Woodland for the past seven years. Mr. Carty served as the Woodland city attorney for 22 years; attorney for the Port of Woodland and Kalama; Clark County prosecuting attorney from 1973 to 1980; and former Democratic chairman for Clark and Cowlitz counties. He enjoyed northwest history, the Civil War and politics. He married his wife, Leona, on July 12, 1942, at St. Mary of Guadalupe Parish in Ridgefield. She survives him at home. Also surviving are three daughters, Julianne Brown and Bridget Carty, both of Vancouver, and Ann Jewell of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; two sons, Michael Carty of Plant City, Fla., and Ken Carty of Battle Ground; two brothers, Martin Carty of Kelso, and William Carty of Tempe, Ariz.; and eight grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of Guadalupe Parish. A reception will be held after the Mass at the Oak Tree Restaurant. Private inurnment will take place at St. Mary of Guadalupe Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 3114 E. Fourth Plain Blvd., Vancouver, WA 98661. Arrangements are by Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home, Vancouver. ================ The Daily News Longview, Washington Saturday, 27 October 2001 James Carty, 80, dies For a controversial man with a sharp tongue, Jim Carty had a soft heart. The Woodland man died Wednesday at 80. As an attorney, Carty freed convicts, stirred debate and sometimes stood at the center of political firestorms. He also accepted vegetables as payment from people who couldn't afford his services. Tears filled his eyes when he fell silent, unable to ever tell his wife about child abuse cases he prosecuted. "Everyone knew he was very candid," said his widow, Leona Carty. "If he didn't agree with you, he'd let you know. Not the whole world — he'd let you know." When he thought he was right, he was bold about making unpopular moves. He helped get Alvin "Creepy" Karpis, a 1930s FBI Public Enemy Number One, out of Alcatraz after the gangster spent 33 years there for kidnapping. As Clark County prosecutor, Carty announced to commissioners in 1980 that his office didn't have enough money, so he would no longer prosecute misdemeanor gambling or marijuana charges. Bilateral pneumonia claimed Carty, who was already dogged by Parkinson's Disease and a weak heart and lungs. He died at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver. Carty was born Nov. 11, 1920, in Ridgefield, Wash. He lived near Woodland in north Clark County for most of his life. From 1980 to 1984, he lived in Phoenix, then returned to Woodland, where he lived until he died. With a law degree from Duke, Carty opened a legal practice in Woodland. Eventually, he served as Woodland city attorney, attorney for the Port of Woodland and Kalama, and Clark County prosecuting attorney. He immersed himself in politics, serving as Democratic chairman in Clark and Cowlitz counties, and even convincing the Vancouver League of Women Voters to admit him as a member after an 18-month fight to join Leona Carty said she is most proud of the way people respected her husband. "There was no place we could go without somebody recognizing him, wanting to shake his hand, wanting to visit for a few minutes. It didn't matter who they were." She said she's also proud of his generosity. "I can remember taking potatoes or other farm products as the fee in the office," she said. Once, a woman gave the couple a crocheted bedspread. Other times, corn and fish paid the bills. "He would never tell me about child abuse cases," she said. "Once, I remember, he started to tell me one … and then he got tears in his eyes. He couldn't handle it." "Under the crust, there was a warm heart," said former Woodland mayor Walter Church Jr., who worked with Carty in the 1960s. "He was a controversial individual, and he loved to be controversial. I always said that if black was black, then he'd argue that it was white." "He could write a hot letter," said Church, who knows because Carty sent him one years ago when the former mayor was "instrumental" in getting rid of polluting ducks at Horseshoe Lake. Carty didn't like that, and he let Church know. Later, Church said, when he ran for county commissioner, Carty mailed him a letter laden with support. Church said he'll always remember how his friend complained about the hardware store that sold him what he thought was a junky lawn mower. Once, when Carty's car ran out of gas, Church and other pals suggested he take fuel from his mower. Carty replied that it wouldn't work for the car, because he mixed oil with the gas. "We got one on him," Church said with a chuckle, relishing a rare victory over the know-it-all Carty. Church loaned Carty a wheelchair when Parkinson's took the use of his legs. Friday, he visited Leona Carty to pick it up.
