He was preceded in death by his sisters, Anna Mary, Helen and Margaret; and his brother, James. He is survived by his wife, Katherine "Kathy" (Bickel); his two sons, Martin "Marty" and Ryan (Allison Saucy); his grandsons, Cael and Finn; his brother, William "Hap" of Arizona; as well as numerous relatives, friends and admirers. Martin was born to William Edward and Mary Elizabeth (Fitzpatrick) Carty on April 12, 1933, in Ridgefield, Washington. He grew up on his family farm, "Blackwater Ranch," where he spent his youth perfecting the arts of cow milking, duck hunting, and trouble making. He graduated from Ridgefield High School prior to his tour in Germany as a medic in the United States Army. Martin was very proud of his accomplishments throughout his career. Upon returning from his military service due to his father's ailing health, Martin took over operation of the family ranch. He continued that work until the bulk of the land was sold to the federal government in order to establish the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge in Ridgefield, Washington. Martin's path ultimately led him to Cowlitz County, Washington, and a job that defined him in the eyes of many. He served in a management capacity with the Cowlitz County government for nearly three decades, spending much of that time as Director of Public Works, Parks & Recreation, and Community Development. Martin's rise to the top of those departments marked the first that all three were united under the leadership of one individual. Martin was often referred to as a superbureaucrat, in recognition of the sizeable influence he exerted both in his community and throughout the state. Martin was quoted as saying, "I like to see a job get done." And he did. Martin was admired for believing in what he was doing and persuading others to share those beliefs. He was a kind, jovial, hard-working man who loved and cherished his family. Martin enjoyed spending time improving the outdoors and beautifying his environment. He personally planted thousands of trees throughout his lifetime, including more than 1,200 on the 7 acre property where he lived for more than 27 years. Martin never met a person he couldn't charm with his bright spirit and sharp sense of humor. To his family he left a shining example of determination, dedication, and unending enthusiasm. Martin often said if he had his life to live over, he wouldn't change a thing. Services were held at St. Mary of Guadalupe in Ridgefield, Washington on February 3, 2012.
