Crist, 81 years old, who was employed for many years in Sterling as a blacksmith by the Burlington railroad, died at 1 o’clock this afternoon at a local hospital, following an illness of ten days. Until he was stricken with a heart attack ten days ago, at which time he was taken to the hospital, Mr. Crist enjoyed good health for a man of his age. Mr. Crist was born at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on June 17, 1860. He resided there until he was five years old when he moved with his parents to Springfield, Ohio. Many time Mr. Crist told members of his family and friends that he remembers the time at Springfield when men rode through the country telling of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Crist lived in Springfield for seventeen years. While there he learned the trade of blacksmith. Leaving Springfield, Mr. Crist located at Freeport, Illinois where he made his residence for five years. He went to Fort Worth, Texas and entered the employ of the Texas and Pacific Railway, serving six years with that company. He did press drill work in the machine shops for two years and then went on the road as a locomotive fireman. After working as fireman for four years, he entered the employ of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad at Sedalia, Missouri. Later he moved to Sumner, Missouri where he conducted a general machine shop and from Sumner came to Sterling in 1906. Mr. Crist’s first work in Sterling was firing a stationary engine at the Burlington shop. He did general repair work and in the fall of 1907 a blacksmith shop was established. He worked as a blacksmith until he was retired eleven years ago, upon reaching the age of 70 years. In 1922, Mr. Crist had the distinction of being one of six men who met in Chicago for the purpose of perfecting the organization of the Mechanical Department Association. Mr. Crist was married to Miss Mary E. Franklin, at Sedalia, Missouri on January 15, 1885. Mr. Crist was a member of the Methodist church for fifty-seven years. He has been active in varied church work throughout his long membership and obtained much satisfaction from religion. He taught in the Sunday school and at one time served as Sunday school superintendent. Surviving Mr. Crist are his widow and six children; Thomas C. Crist of Haxtun, Charles Lee Crist of Billings, Montana, Mrs. Jane Kraxberger of Boise, Idaho, Frank Crist, Wesley Crist and Ulysses Crist of Sterling. Arrangements for the funeral are in the charge of A.D. Jackson and Son Mortuary and had not been completed today.
