Read More	From a newspaper clipping: James Estep Conklin was born in Allegheny county, Maryland, January 11, 1850 and passed away at the home of his son Charles on the old Conklin farm in Yell township, five miles northeast of Dayton, November 20, 1937, at the age of 87 years, 10 months and 9 days. While Mr. Conklin was still very young, his parents moved to Virginia where they lived but a short time, thence to Greencastle, Indiana, where they made their home for a number of years. During the trying days of the Civil War, while his father was serving in the Union army, the young James worked during his school vacation at various tasks suited to a boy of his age, to help in the support of the family. After the close of the war in the year of 1868 the Conklin family decided to journey west in quest of a new home, so loading their meager possessions into a covered wagon they headed for Missouri. However, their journey led them across Iowa and a few miles south of Des Moines in the community where James or Jim as he was better known, grew to young manhood. Twelve years later, in 1880 this farm was traded for a farm one half mile east of the present Conklin home in Yell township. In the year of 1880 he purchased the raw land, the site of the present Conklin home and build a home for himself. In this same year on December 22, he was united in marriage to Mary Amanda Chapman, who preceded him in death two years ago. To this union were born ten children, seven of which are still living. The oldest Daniel passed away at the age of 12 years, Edna and Anna in infancy. Those living are Mrs. Maggie Richardson, Mrs. Dora Odell, Joseph and Charles, all of the vicinity of Dayton, William of Stratford, Mrs. Ida Smith of Fort Dodge, and Mrs. Pearl Williams of Lehigh. Mr. Conklin was an ardent lover of farm life and spent the greater number of his active years tilling the soil on the farm which he loved so much and never tired of recalling the incidents of his early life before the days the days of gravel roads, rural delivery and other modern conveniences. In the spring of 1915 he retired from active farming and moved to Dayton where he has since lived until a few months ago when he left his home in town to spend his last days on the farm in Yell township. Besides his seven living children, he leaves to mourn his passing, twelve grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends and old neighbors from the community where he spent so many years. His funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the home of Charley Conklin, conducted by Reverend Watson Herrold.
