A Citizen of Highwood Passes to the Great Beyond James Fergus died on Tuesday June 12, 1894, at the home of his mother, on Davis creek, just south of the Highwoods, and near Libby and Merrill ranch. Mr. Fergus was one of the Fergus brothers, well known in this section, and a brother of Mrs. James McDonald, of Upper Highwood. Mrs. Fergus and sons came to Fort Benton from Michigan nearly 12 years ago, and for several years resided on the Shonkin. From there they moved to their present home on Davis creek, where the mother, two sisters and two brothers still reside. The cause of James Fergus' death was a dropsical affection. For more than a year past he has been suffering from this ailment, but recently his condition was regarded as improving until about a week ago the disease attacked his heart and caused his death. His remains were taken to Great Falls, where they were interred on Thursday, June 14. Deceased was age 31 years. .......... The Weekly Tribune, Great Falls, Mont., 15 June 1894 Death of James Fergus On Tuesday James Fergus, of the headwaters of Davis Creek in the Highwood mountains, died of consumption. The deceased was well known and highly respected. He formerly lived in the Prickly Pear valley and at Fort Benton, prior to removing to Davis creek. The remains were brought to this city and the funeral services will be held at St. Ann's church at 8 a.m. today. William Fergus, Owen Fergus, Mrs. Fergus and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. McDonald, David Pimperton* of Davis creek and John Madden of Arrow creek, are in the city to attend the funeral. ------------------------- The original obituary read David Pumperton.
