Horace Ford Thursday afternoon at three o'clock, from the effects of a fall resulting from a paralytic stroke on Tuesday. Very few men were better known to the people of this community than Capt. Jim Frank Tawes. Men and women who now have children and grandchildren remember when he kept a store uptown where candy, pop, snow- balls, peanuts and fruit could be purchased for various sums from a penny to a nickel, and it was not altogether the quality of the goods that kept the trade going to his store, but rather it was the real affection this man had for children that brought them back, and back again. For years he was employed by the firm of J. P. Tawes & Bro., who do a large volume of business with watermen, and here again he was popular with the people just as he was when he kept a store of his own. Some years ago he retired, and has been living with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. B. Horace Ford, at their home on Columbia avenue, since then. Mr. Tawes was a member of Peninsula Council, Jr., 0. U. A. M., and seldom missed a meeting of this organization, Winter or Summer. Early in life he had affiliated with Mount Pleasant M. P. church, and was one of the oldest and most faithful members there. Sunday school, church, prayer meeting, would always find Capt. Jim Frank present unless sickness prevented, and in all of his more than 85 years he seldom was ill, having been active up to the day he was stricken with paralysis, although he had suffered for several years with rheumatism. He was a man of small stature, with a big heart; a Christian gentleman who always practiced what he professed; a man who said good things about his neighgors or else said nothing; a man identified with the early history of Crisfield, who saw it grow and develop into a thriving community; a man of the kind that would have made any community in which he lived better for his having lived there. He was born Feb. 9th, 1850, in Crisfield, his parents being Noah Tawes and Grace Nelson Tawes. His wife, who died many years ago, was Miss Mary C. Cole before her marriage. He is survived by two children, Mrs. B. Horace Ford, of this city, and Harold J. Tawes, of Hampton, Va., three sisters, Mrs. Mary Wharton, Mrs. Ella Loreman and Mrs. Ida Horsey, and one brother, Capt. Lorenzo Tawes, all of this city. The Crisfield Times, August 9, 1935 pgs.1&6
