White Passed Away After Illness of Nearly Four Weeks The Grim Reaper has again visited Fort Benton and claimed James Franklin White, the only survivor of the Civil War living in Fort Benton or this vicinity as far as we know. Mr. White had been in failing health since the death of his lifetime companion, Mrs. White, over a year ago, but his death came as a great shock to his large circle of friends in this section where he has lived for the past eight years. Mr. White's passing marks the close of a most useful career, he having that priceless faculty of making friends with everyone with whom he came in contact. He moved to Montana with his wife eight years ago to spend their declining years with their two children, and during that time he became known to every man, woman and child in this city, who without exception held him in the very highest esteem. His passing makes a place vacant in this community that will never be filled. Always of a cheerful disposition he was ever giving words of encouragement to those with whom he came in contact, never saying a harsh word of anyone--always making friends. His indeed is a rare character and the world is much better for his having been in it and taking a part in life for 88 years. All that loving hands could do was done for Mr. White during his last illness and the daughter, Mrs. Snyder, has been his constant companion and looking after him before and since the death of his wife in Jan. 1927. James Franklin White was born in Cass county, Michigan, on June 20th, 1840. He was the son of Andrew and Jane (Organ) White, natives of Virginia and Ohio respectively. Throughout his active business life the father followed the occupation of farming, and at an early day he moved to Michigan and died at his home in Cass county at the age of 57 years. In 1852 the mother moved to Linn county, Iowa, and lived near Mount Vernon for six years, at the end of which time she moved to Kansas where she died at the age of 91 years. They were parents of ten children of whom two are now living: Mrs. Elizabeth McKee, of Manhattan, Kansas, and George W. White, of Pawnee, Oklahoma. Mr. White came with his mother to Iowa in 1852 and to Kansas in 1858. In 1860 he returned to Mount Vernon, Iowa, and on the 11th day of August 1862, enlisted in Company F, Twenty-fourth Iowa Volunteer Infantry and took part in such important engagements as Seedan creek, Fishers hill, Sabine Cross Roads, Winchester and other engagements in the Shenandoah valley. At Vicksburg he was promoted to the rank of corporal and served with that rank until discharged from the service at Cumberland, Maryland, in 1865. He then returned to Kansas and located west of Atkinson in 1865. With a party of 21 men he hauled government supplies to the Fort at Julesburg, Colo. He then returned to Iowa and on Sept. 4, 1866, he married Miss Levina Kepler, daughter of Peter Y. and Elizabeth (James) Kepler, natives of Maryland. To this union were born four children, two of whom survive him: E. J. White and Mrs. Lillie B. Snyder, both of this city. One daughter passed away in 1908 and a son at the age of 9. After the marriage he went to Kansas and farmed for ten years in Butler county. In 1876 he returned to Iowa and farmed there until he sold out in 1892. He went to Custer City, Okla., where he spent ten years and came to Montana in 1920, where he has since resided. The ranks of the blue and gray are fast thinning out and it will only be a few years until only a memory will be left of those who suffered privations, gave their lives, and bled for their country, and it is little wonder that those survivors of the present day are held in such high esteem. Besides the relatives mentioned, four grandchildren survive him. Mrs. Sylvia Stevens and Frank White, of this city, and Mrs. Violet Miller, of Mullin, Idaho, all of whom were present; and L. Ray Snyder, of American Lake, Wash., who is an invalid and unable to attend. Funeral services were held from the Louther chapel on Saturday morning at 11 o'clock and were conducted by the Rev. Jinnett, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church. A large concourse of friends gathered to pay their last respects to a man, a neighbor and a friend. Members of the local post of the American Legion had charge of the services at the grave.
