He had just returned from a trip to the grocery store when he was stricken. Born 17 Jul 1884, in Randolph Co., Mr. Bales was the son of Curtis and Sarah Mills Bales. OBITUARY: "James Gillespie (Jim) Bales, 82, died unexpectedly 02 Mar 1968 at his home at 309 West Washington Street, Winchester. He had just returned from a trip to the grocery store when he was stricken. Born 17 Jul 1884, in Randolph Co., Mr. Bales was the son of Curtis and Sarah Mills Bales. He was a lifelong county resident and member of the New Liberty Congregational Christian Chuch. Mr. Bales was an enthusiast and promoter of old-time music. In the early 1920s he played clarinet in the Lynn community band. In the 1930s he was a member of various bands and also directed the 5-piece Lynn Symphony Orchestra. Later he played mostly with his family orchestra, playing in church engagements. From 1939 to 1955 Mr. Bales operated a combination grocery store and filling station at Farmland, and his home was a center for musicians. Upon his retirement, he moved to Winchester and until the time of his death remained active making and repairing stringed instruments and participating in musical get togethers, teaching stringed instruments and directing various groups. He was director of the Jolly Musicians who met weekly at the home of Orville Rich, Winchester. Survivors include his widow, Doris; two sons, Kenneth Bales, of Lynn, R.R. 2, and Kendrick Bales of Winchester, R.R. 3; two daughters, Mrs. Dondena Campbell of Moberly,MO, and Mrs. Frances Magner at home; one step-son, Joe Lewellen of Whittier, CA; one half-sister Mrs. Magnolia (Nolia) Edwards of Winchester; 10 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. His first wife, the former Orpha Horner, died in 1924. Burial was in New Liberty Cemetery." Don Hinshaw's Obituaries (clipping date 3-4-68) In Aug. 2005 Mary A. (Littrell) Bales shared these comments about James: "James drove a 'hack,' a horse-drawn school bus for awhile. Dondena was too young then for school, but would go with James and sit on the children's laps along the route... James taught himself to play mandolin and violin. He also played the clarinet. He loved to play marches and waltzes. He played for skating and square dances. The jigs and folk pieces he could play by ear. He studied a book and learned how to direct an orchestra, He and several local men would play together, often in the side room of his service station that he operated in Farmland, IN.
