Description	:	James Gilley was the son of Andrew (1803 PA) and Catherine (1801 PA) Gilley. He married Louisa Cretsinger on 18 February 1869 in Guthrie Co, Iowa. They were the parents of Margaret, Nora (Wm Gustoff), Myra (George Mathias Dankle), Alverda (Jacob Rhoads), Vernice Edgar (Mary Edna Beers), and Frank. Carroll Sentinel - Monday, August 4, 1902 - James Gilley, one of the old settlers of Carroll county, died Wednesday night at his home near Carrollton. His death was caused by an overdose of morphine. He had been in very poor health for a number of years and had tried all kinds of treatment with no prospect of. regaining his health. Of late he had been very much discouraged and had not seemed quite like himself, but the news of his death came as a sudden shock. Mr. Gilley had been a resident of this county for more than forty years, being one of the early pioneers that settled along the river when the country was new. He was born in Medina county, Ohio, sixty-six years ago. When twenty years old (in 1850) he first came to Carroll county and the following spring started to drive cross the country to Salt Lake. He returned to Ohio and remained until the war broke out, when he enlisted and was discharged for physical disability. In 1862 he returned to this county and remained on his farm near Carrollton until his death. He leaves five children, a brother, Wm. Gilley, of this city, and a sister, Mrs. J.K. Deal of Des Moines, to mourn his demise. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the church at Carrollton, Rev. Kenneth Brown of the Presbyterian church at Glidden preaching the sermon. The remains were interred in the Carrollton cemetery, many old friends and neighbors and a number from this city attending him to his last resting place.
