He died this morning at his home, 1028 State street, after a lingering illness. In fact, Mr. Hamill never fully recovered his long sickness of last spring. James Hamill was born in Ireland seventy-five years ago last July. He came to America in 1845 with his parents and settled at Pittsburg (sic), Penn. On Sept. 3, 1850, he married Letitia Kirkendall and they came to Kansas. They reached Lawrence March 12, 1856. As the time of the civil war approached, times became so desperate in Lawrence that Mr. and Mrs. Hamill moved. Later they heard that "Emporia was the Paradise of Kansas," and was free from border warfare so they drove to Emporia behind an ox team in 1859. Soon after arrival here Mr. Hamill built the house in which he died. They lived there fifty-two years. James Hamill was a soldier in the Eleventh Kansas volunteers, company C. His captain was Captain L. T. Heritage and his colonel was Preston B. Plumb. He saw considerable service and sustained a wound in the hip, which was a reminder of the war times until the time of his death. Jimmy Hamill was one of the best known men in the town. His disposition was one of the happy, witty, Irish nature, that made him a favorite with all he met, and his hearty friendship especially for his war comrades, will cause him to live in their memories forever. Next Saturday Senator Plumb's soldiers will celebrate their annual reunion and Jimmy will be missed among the number. His wife and daughter, Mary, survive him. Mr. Hamill has for forty years been a member of the Christian church. Rev. Parker will conduct the funeral services which will be held at the Hamill home, 1028 State street, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. **************************************** The Emporia Gazette, 03 Dec 1902, Wednesday JIMMY HAMILL'S FUNERAL This afternoon the home of the late James Hamill at 1028 State street was crowded with his friends who gathered for his funeral. Mr. Hamill died Monday morning after a short attack of pneumonia. Rev. Parker of the Christian church conducted the funeral services and the body was laid to rest in the Maplewood cemetery by the dead man's soldier comrades. James Hamill was a member of the Hancock post of the G.A.R. He fought in the Eleventh Kansas Company C. Mr. Hamill was desperately wounded during the Kansas and Missouri border struggle in the civil war in the same battle in which his captian, L. T. Heritage, was wounded and in which a brother of Mrs. Trask was killed. A more extended notice will be given tomorrow. ************************************** The Emporia Republican, 04 Dec 1902, Thursday OBITUARY James Hamill was born in Ireland in the [year] 1827. he lived there until 18 years of age, coming to America in 1845 and settling at Pittsburg[h] Pennsylvania. He was married September 3 1850, to Letitia Kirkendall, and with his wife he came to the western country to make his home. He arrived in Kansas March 12, 1856, and first settled at Lawrence, but hearing so much of the town of Emporia, they came here in 1859, bringing their household goods here in a wagon drawn by oxen. He built the house in which he died, and had lived there for forty-two years. He was a soldier in the Civil War, being a member of Company C, Eleventh Kansas. He served under Colonel Preston B. Plumb and Captain Heritage and in one battle in which he was engaged was wounded in the hip. His wife and one daughter Mary, survive him.
