The entire state, and men and women from other states that were friends and acquaintances of the Rev. Dr. James Henley Thornwell will be shocked to learn of his death which occurred suddenly at his home in Fort Mill Monday morning at 4 o'clock. Dr. Thornwell had been sick since Thursday, but his condition was not considered serious. Sunday night a change came for the worse. A physician was summoned and although his pulse was found to be in good condition, the learned divine passed away within five minutes after the doctor arrived. The cause of his death was neuralgia of the heart. Dr. Thornwell was in the 63rd year of his age, being born in Columbia in 1864. A wife, three sons and six daughters survive him. His wife was formerly a Miss Florence Earle, of Pendleton, and the children are Jas. H. Thornwell, a professor at Winnsboro; Earle Thornwell, a lawyer in the lower portion of the state; Alison Thornwell, of Atlanta; Misses Nancy Witherspoon Thornwell, Ladybird Thornwell, Roberta Thornwell, and Florence Thornwell, of Fort Mill, Miss Mary Thornwell of Greenville, Mrs. Julia McLees of Greenwood. Mr. Charles Thornwell, of Washington, Ga., is the only surviving brother. Two sisters survive him. Mrs. Hattie Hague and Mrs. Dr. Anderson, both of Morganton, N. C. Dr. Thornwell was the son of the Rev. J. H. Thornwell, the celebrated theologian and philosopher, who was at one time president of the South Carolina college and one of the editors of the Southern Presbyterian Review. Dr. Thornwell finished a course at the South Carolina college and studied law later, under Wilson & Witherspoon of Yorkville. In 1869 he began the study of theology at the seminary at Columbia and the degree of doctor of divinity was conferred upon by the Presbyterian college at Clinton and also by Davidson college. He was a delegate from this state to the Pan-Presbyterian council at Glascow, Scotland, and there delivered an address. Since 1882, he has been pastor of the Presbyterian church at Fort Mill and Ebenezer. Dr. Thornwell was a gallant Confederate soldier, serving his country in the Fourth Reserves and was later a member of Bolton's cavalry company. Dr. Thornwell was a faithful member of the Knights of Pythias and was at the time of his death, grand keeper of records and seals. He was well known throughout the state as being identified with the above order, for which society he ever labored conscientiously and well. The funeral services will take place today at Fort Mill.
