Read More	Prominent Asbury Resident Died In Baltimore Saturday James H. Cullen Passed Away In Johns Hopkins Hospital FUNERAL WAS HELD WEDNESDAY MORNING James H. Cullen, one of the community's most prominent citizens, a Democratic political leader for many years, and highly regarded by citizens of the county in all walks of life, died at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Saturday evening of last week, after a short stay there. Mr. Cullen had been in poor health for some time, and several weeks ago entered the hospital for treatment, but because of his age failed to respond to it and passed away last week. In his early manhood he followed the water and was successful in that business. Then he and his brother opened a retail store in Asbury which for years was a prosperous undertaking and became the center for the discussion of Democratic politics and events of the times as customers and people of the community gathered there day after day. When the late Joshua W. Miles was the political leader of Somerset county, Mr. Cullen was one of his trusted and most valuable lieutenants. He ran for the office of Sheriff, was elected, and held that position for a term of four years. Later, he was elected a member of the Board of County Commissioners, where he made an excellent record. His last political service was as a member of the Board of Supervisors of Election for Somerset County. In late years, having sold his interest in the store to his brother, he lived a rather retired life, devoting his time and attention to farming. However, up until the time of his death, he was interested in things political, and attended Democratic meetings frequently, giving advice and counsel in campaigns. He made several attempts to consolidate the two Democratic factions in the county in the belief that the public could be served better by the election of Democratic officials, something that was difficult to accomplish unless the party presented a united front. A member and supporter of Asbury Methodist Church, he was proud of that institution and the influence it exerted in the community. He had been a member of Chesapeake Lodge No. 147 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons for many years, and the lodge turned out in a body at his funeral. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Marine Bank of Crisfield. Born in Somerset County, he was the son of the late Jacob and Mary Nelson Cullen, and was related to a number of the leading families of this section who had so much to do with the development of the economic and social life of a community that was young when he was young. His birthday was May 1st, 1859, and he was just little more than 84 years of age. Until a short time before his death he was active, despite his advanced age and very few people realized that he had passed his eightieth birthday by several years. Mr. Cullen had many friends in all parts of the county who regarded him as a man of keen vision and ability, and even his political opponents had great respect for his planning and fighting during a campaign. His genial disposition and many admirable traits of character endeared him to all who knew him. His body was brought to Crisfield by the Lawson & Hubbard ambulance on Sunday, and taken to his home in Asbury, to rest until Wednesday morning, and many of his friends and acquaintances repaired there to pay their respects and offer their condolences to the bereaved family. Funeral services were held in Asbury Methodist Church Wednesday morning at 11:00 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. T. Rowlenson, and attended by members of Chesapeake Lodge of Masons and a large number of relatives, neighbors, and friends. Interment was in the Asbury cemetery. The pall bearers were officers and members of Chesapeake Lodge. Many beautiful floral pieces sent to the home attested to the esteem and regard in which he generally was held. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Arinthia Jane Cullen, and three daughters, Mrs. Mayme Collins, of Crisfield, Mrs. Magdaline Henry, and Mrs. Cecile Lawson.
