It had been known that Mr. Donnelly was quite ill with pneumonia but he was on Friday reported to have taken a change for the better, and the next word received was the distressing news of his death. ... Residents of this section were much grieved when they heard the sad news of the death of J.J. Donnelly at his home near Crown Hill on Saturday evening. It had been known that Mr. Donnelly was quite ill with pneumonia but he was on Friday reported to have taken a change for the better, and the next word received was the distressing news of his death. The remains were removed to Lead on Monday, and on Wednesday afternoon the funeral was held under the auspices of Harmony Lodge, A.O.U.W., of Central, of which lodge he was a member. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Newcomb of Lead Baptist church and was attended by many friends of deceased and his family. Interment was in South Lead cemetery. For almost twenty years James J. Donnelly had been a familiar character in this section. Coming to the Hills in the middle '80s he resided for a time in Central. In 1891 he moved to Portland to accept the position of assayer for the Portland Mining Co. When that company closed down early in 1892 "Jimmie" came to Terry and opened the first barber shop in this city. Disposing of his business here after a short time he returned to Portland, where he became interested in mining, and since then he has led the alluring life of a prospector. Deceased was about 50 years of age, and leaves a wife - the sister of Superintendent Slaughter of the Portland Co. - and five children to whom the sympathy of all is extended in their sad bereavement." Lead Daily Call newspaper, December 3, 1906 - "Death of J.J. Donnelly. Word was received in this city this morning that J.J. Donnelly, the former postmaster at Portland, died Sunday of pneumonia after an illness of but a few days. Mr. Donnelly was one of the old timers of the Black Hills and was interested in considerable mining ground in the Bald Mountain district. He was about 50 years of age at the time of his death and leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss, and they have the sympathy of a host of friends in their bereavement. He was a quiet, industrious man, one who made a friend of everyone he met, and there are many who will miss him and sorrow that he died. The funeral will probably take place on Wednesday under the auspices of the A.O.U.W. lodge of Central City." Lead Daily Call, December 4, 1906 - "Tomorrow afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock, the funeral of the late James J. Donnelly, of Portland, who died Sunday afternoon of pneumonia, will be held from the undertaking parlors of J.L. Marcoux. Rev. Newcomb of the Baptist church will officiate. The funeral will be held under the auspices of Harmony Lodge, A.O.U.W. of Central City. Interment will be in South Lead cemetery." Lead Daily Call, December 5, 1906 - "The funeral of James Donnelly of Portland took place this afternoon from the undertaking rooms of Joseph Marcoux, and was attended by a large number of the friends of the deceased and his family, as well as the members of Harmony lodge, A.O.U.W. of Central City." SOUTH DAKOTA STATE FILE #5404 - Record index notes that James J. Donnelly died in Lawrence County on December 1, 1906. The 1900 United States Census shows James J. Donnelly (age 39, born August 1860) residing in the Portland School Township, Lawrence County, South Dakota. The document notes that he was born in Indiana and was a dairyman. Also included in the household at that time were his wife Violet (age 31) and four children - Bertha M. Holt (13), Hazel D. Donnelly (4), Dana H. Donnelly (3) and Myrtle I. Donnelly (10 months). Black Hills Daily Times (Deadwood, South Dakota), Tuesday, February 13, 1894, page 3: J. J. Donnelly was down from Terry yesterday on business connected with his barber shop there. Black Hills Weekly (Deadwood, South Dakota), Saturday, July 6, 1895, page 4: A marriage license was yesterday issued to James J. Donnelly of Terry, to marry Mrs. Violet S. Holt of Belle Fourche.
