Description	:	Obituary LAW--James J. Law was born June 8, 1845, in Gibson County, Tennessee, and died at the state hospital in Topeka December 8th, at the age of 75 years. He spent the years of his childhood and youth on his father's farm in Tennessee. Law was born June 8, 1845, in Gibson County, Tennessee, and died at the state hospital in Topeka December 8th, at the age of 75 years. He spent the years of his childhood and youth on his father's farm in Tennessee. When James was 16 years old and still in the district school, he was persuaded to enlist in the Confederate army, but later escaped their ranks and enlisted in Company H, 5th United States Infantry, and served on the frontier in Colorado and Texas. When he received an honorable discharge, he came to Kansas and landed in Sherman Township, Clay County, in November, 1865, with a capital of 75 cents. For four years he worked as a farm hand and in March, 1869, homesteaded 160 acres of land in Sherman Township, where he lived for many years. On October 22, 1866, Mr. Law took unto himself a wife and helpmate, Miss Lydia E. Cooper, daughter of Hiram and Sarah E. Cooper, and they commenced housekeeping in a log cabin. An interesting fact in connection with the history of Mr. and Mrs. Law is that they were the first couple married in Clay County after its organization. Six children were born to this union--William E. [sic], Hiram L., Charles W., and Perry J., Mary E. and Frances E. The two latter died when young and the son Charles [sic] is also dead. Mrs. Law passed way several years ago. The Laws were connected with the Methodist Episcopal church and Mr. Law was recognized as one of the pillars and he was a member of the A. F. and A. M. of Clifton. The deceased started his career in Kansas in very humble circumstances, but by constant endeavor became the owner of a good farm and acquired the comforts and luxuries of life and was a highly respected citizen and one who was valuable to his community. He is survived by three sons--Hiram, Perry, and Charles, all of whom live in Sherman Township. The funeral services will be held today (Thursday) in the Sherman church and conducted by Rev. Nunally. Burial will be in the Sherman cemetery. The Clay County Times, 14 December 1919
