Mr. Bliss had never recovered from a stroke which he suffered last August. Interment was in the Oakdale cemetery. James Joseph Bliss, the oldest pioneer of Antelope County, was born in LaPort, Indiana, on February 19, 1859. He departed this life on April 10, 1942, at the age of eighty-three years, one month and twenty-one days. He was the last one of his family. At the age of a year and a half he with his parents moved to Vinton, Iowa, living there until he was twelve years of age, then moving with his parents to Oakdale, Nebraska, where his father homesteaded eight miles south of town. Mr. Bliss lived on his farm sixty-five years with exception of one and a half years which were spent working on the Union Pacific railroad in and around Boise, Idaho. He was married on February 10, 1887, to Pheobe Peets. Nine children came to bless this home. As a boy he attended school at St. Claire, also helping his father on the farm. He took over the farm at the time of his father's death, carrying on with these activities until he and his wife moved to Oakdale where he lived until the death of his wife. From then on he lived with his daughter. On August 10, 1941, he suffered a stroke and was taken to the Tilden hospital. On January 23 he was brought back to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Albert Michaelson, where he lived until the time of his death. He was converted into the M.E. Church in his young manhood. He was an active Odd Fellow for forty-four years, having joined the lodge December 27, 1898. He and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on February 10, 1937. He was a kind and loving husband and father, loved by all who knew him. He was always thinking of those who were dear to him. He leaves to mourn his death, six children: Mrs. Jas. Kinnan, Mrs. Albert Michaelson, and Dellis Bliss of Oakdale; Harry Bliss of Neligh; Mrs. Henry Nelsen of Winside and William Bliss of Arcadia, California. His wife, one daughter and two sons preceded him in death. Also surviving him are twenty-three grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
