Judge, at Napier, at 10:00 o'clock Saturday evening, December 15th, after a short illness with heart failure. Mr. Judge had been in failing health for a number of years, and while his condition was regarded as serious his sudden death was a shock to his family and friends. He had been about the house during the day and had taken his meals with the family as usual. After supper he laid down on the couch as usual to rest and not a half hour before his death was joking and laughing with the family, as he was accustomed to do in the evenings before going to bed. Suddenly his son and daughter-in-law noticed a change come over him and realized that he was dying. They summoned other members of the family and medical assistance, but before either could arrive he had passed peacefully away. The remains were brought to Boone on the Newton & Northwestern train Monday morning, accompanied by a large number of old neighbors and friends of the family and taken to the Church of the Sacred Heart, where requiem high mass was read by Father Saunders, who preached an eloquent funeral sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery west of the city beside those of his wife and one daughter, Annie, who had preceded him to the better world. James Judge was born in Ro common County, Ireland, March 14, 1828, and was in his seventy eighth year at the time of his death. He came to America in 1849 and settled at Troy, New York. Here in 1851 he was united in marriage to Miss Bridget Kelly, also a native of Ireland. They removed to Wisconsin in 1855 and resided at Janesville, Madison and Monroe, Wisconsin, for several years. In 1872 he came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Story County, three miles south of Ontario, and the next year removed across the line to the old home farm in Colfax Township, Boone County. Here they underwent all the hardships and privations incident to pioneer life in a new country and in common with the other hardy pioneers did their full share to develop the wild prairie into the magnificent agricultural country it is today. In 1892, the children being all married and caring for themselves, he and his wife left the farm and came to Boone to spend their declining years in well-earned rest and quiet. They continued to live here until 1899, when his wife's health failing, they removed to Ames and made their home with their son, John E., who is in business there. Here his wife died on August 11, 1901. Since that time he has made his home among his children and with friends in Boone, and was staying at the home of his son, James C., at Napier, when death overtook him. The one daughter of the family Annie (Judge) Jordan, died in Colorado in 1894 and is buried here, leaving four daughters, Mrs. Mary Herron, wife of J.R. Herron of this paper, Agnes, Anna and Alice. Five sons, Patrick H., Michael E., James C. and Joseph A., all prominent farmer of Boone county and John E. a prominent business man of Ames and a number of grandchildren survive to mourn his death and to whom is extended the sincere sympathy of innumerable host of friends to their bereavement.
