Once more the angel of death has called one of our esteemed citizens to come home, James Kirby. James Kirby was born in County Limerick, Ireland, on May 22, 1843. He grew to young manhood in his native country, but at the age of 19 years, came to America to carve out a future for himself. On April 23, 1873, he was united in marrige to Miss Annie Bergin at Bloomington, Illinois. To this union were born four children. Three, James, Frank and Edward, still survive their father and are all at home, one having gone on before. Mr. and Mrs. Kirby, with their family, came to Nebraska and Butler County in March, 1885, and settled on a farm in Center township where they lived and prospered for twenty years. During his residence on the farm he held different public offices, being county supervisor for two terms. In 1905 they moved to David City. Since living here Mr. Kirby has represented the third ward as city councilman for several terms. Just a month ago he was stricken with apoplexy and was helpless until the end came which was at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 5th, at his home. He was 70 years, 2 months and 14 days of age. James Kirby was a consistent member of the Roman Catholic church and a good citizen. He was respected by all who knew him and recognized by all as a man who did what was right as near as he knew how. Always honorable in his dealings with his fellowmen, doing as he would be done by. He had strong convictions of right and wrong and stood by his convictions until convinced that he was in the wrong, then always took his stand for the right. He was a consistent Christian and a man to be depended upon. Butler county and David City loses a good citizen in the death of James Kirby and the hand of sympathy is extended[ed] to the bereaved family. The funeral services will be held from St. Mary's church, Saturday at 10 o'clock in the morning, Rev. Father O'Connor, pastor of the church, conducting them. The body will be laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery just south of town. Besides a number of friends, he leaves a wife, three sons and a sister, residing in Illinois, to mourn his death.
