James Leo Colton, 1216 Taylor, and instructor in auto mechanics at Topeka High School the past 17 years, died Sunday in a Topeka hospital. He had a history of heart trouble. He suffered a heart attack last October and returned to Topeka High for only a few days after Christmas vacation before he was stricken again last January. James Leo Colton, 1216 Taylor, and instructor in auto mechanics at Topeka High School the past 17 years, died Sunday in a Topeka hospital. He had a history of heart trouble. He suffered a heart attack last October and returned to Topeka High for only a few days after Christmas vacation before he was stricken again last January. He had been instrumental in establishing the driver education program for students at Topeka High. Mr. Colton was a driver instructor during summer school and night school sessions for many years. He had also served as assistant track coach. Colton was born Aug. 25, 1911 in Glasco in Cloud County. He came to Topeka from Denver where he had been a civilian instructor with the U.S. Air Force at Lowry Field. Prior to that he was in the Navy from 1942 to 1945. He was member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Kansas Teachers' Assn., National Education Assn., Kansas Vocational Assn., and Antique Auto Club of America. Survivors include his wife. Mrs. Marjorie Colton, and son Gary, both of the home; two brothers, Raymond Colton, Glasco, and Frank Colton, Oakley; two sisters, Mrs. Theresa Hurtig, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Mrs. Genevieve LaBarge, Gaylord. Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Name Catholic Church with burial in Glasco ( Saint Mary's Catholic ) Cemetery. Brennan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
