Schumacher, 84, Kenmare, ND, died Wednesday, January 6, 2021 in a Minot care facility. James Leonard Schumacher was born February 5, 1936 to Frank and Marie (Hoffman) Schumacher in Kenmare, ND. He was raised and educated in Kenmare, graduating in 1955 from St. Agnes Catholic Academy in Kenmare. On March 7, 1957, James enlisted in the United States Army and completed his field artillery training at the United States Army Training Center in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. He was honorably discharged March 6, 1959. James was united in marriage to Beverly Knudson on November 25, 1961, in Bismarck. They built their life in Kenmare, where James would remain a proud resident his entire life. During his early years, James worked as a mechanic and tended bar. He completed Peace Officer courses through Minot State College and served for a time on the Kenmare Police Department. He worked for many years at Ingerson Manufacturing. His loving wife passed away in 1989. James enjoyed attending auctions and had a keen eye for treasures and items he could give a new life. He had a special talent for fixing almost anything and was particularly gifted with metal work and repurposing. During his retirement years, he could be found traveling all over the region for auctions and church dinners with his longtime friend, Bernice. He frequented the coulee in his neighborhood for horseradish and Juneberry picking. James was a devout Catholic and a life-long member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Kenmare. He was also a member of the American Legion. James’s loving family includes his brother Luke Schumacher, Bismarck. He was a jovial uncle to Steve, Susan, Randy, Sandi, Coleen, Claudette, Dan, Wilma, Mary, Jim, Bridget, Loyal, Dawn, Fred, Jimmy, and Deanne and numerous great nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; his parents, Frank and Marie; an infant sister, Agnes; brothers, Joe, Frank, and Lawrence Schumacher; sisters, Hilda Weaver, Margaret Olson, Dorothy Hanrahan, and Mary Therese Russell; and longtime friend, Bernice Larson. Visitation: there will be no reviewal as cremation has taken place, however, friends may sign a guest register book one hour prior to the service at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Kenmare, ND. There will also be a recitation of the rosary at 10:30 am in the church. All local and state COVID-19 guidelines will be followed. Mass of Christian Burial: Friday, January 15, 2021, at 11 am at ST.
