(Doc) Bess, 70 years of age, and life-long resident of Tipton county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fern Graham, wife of Edward Graham, 307 Columbia avenue, at 12:45 Wednesday morning, death following an illness of almost 16 months from paralysis. Mr. Bess was stricken November 30, 1934 at the home of a grandson, Lester Rubush, in this city, where he had gone to visit for the day and from that time on was helpless. For many months he was at the home of a daughter, Mrs. C.O. Rubush in Frankfort and was brought to the home of Mrs. Graham, three months ago following an accident to Mrs. Rubush, who fell and was seriously injured and could not longer care for him. Following the death the body was removed to the Young funeral home on West Jefferson street for preparation, and was returned to the home of the daughter Wednesday morning to lie in state until the hour of services. The funeral will be held at the Graham home. 307 Columbia Ave. at 2:00 o'clock Thursday afternoon and burial will follow in Fairview cemetery, beside the wife whose death occurred seven years ago. Rev. A.H. Pearcy of Tipton will have charge to the service. "Doc" Bess as he was known to all his friends, was born on a farm northwest of Tipton 4 1/2 miles, 79 years ago, his parents Mr. and Mrs. William Bess, being pioneers of the county. He was reared on the farm and was noted as a splendid agriculturist and stock man. For years he conducted a breeding barn for horses and it was through his efforts that Tipton county produced a better breed of horses than most communities. "Doc" Bess was a man who could not say "no" to one in need and often gave to others when he himself needed it. Generous to a fault was his characteristic. Surviving children are Miss Myrtle Bess and Mrs. Margaret Lowry of Indianapolis; Russell Bess of Eureka, Calif.; Mrs. C.O. Rubush of Frankfort; Mrs Edward Graham and Mrs. J.C. Goar of Tipton; Mrs. Nellie Tuhn of Jefferson City, Ia., and Mrs. Esther Boomershine of Connersville. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
