Description	:	BURKE, JAMES M.—James M. Burke, a long-time resident of the Geneva community, passed away early Friday morning, December 25, 1959, at the Thayer County Memorial hospital at Hebron, following a heart attack suffered the previous evening. Mr. Burke, Geneva police magistrate, had been in failing health for some time, but he had been up and around visiting his many friends in the community the day prior to his death. Burke, a long-time resident of the Geneva community, passed away early Friday morning, December 25, 1959, at the Thayer County Memorial hospital at Hebron, following a heart attack suffered the previous evening. Mr. Burke, Geneva police magistrate, had been in failing health for some time, but he had been up and around visiting his many friends in the community the day prior to his death. He became ill in the evening and was taken to the hospital for treatment. He showed improvement during the night. He passed away a few hours later at the age of 83 years, 1 month and 17 days. James M. Burke, son of John C. and Margaret Burke, was born November 8, 1876, at Carroll, Ia. November 8, 1899, he was united in marriage to Minnie E. Nothomb at Seward, Neb. The Burkes came to the Geneva community in 1910 and this continued to be their home. For many years he engaged in farming near Geneva, later retiring from the farm and moving to Geneva. He was always active and continued to keep busy by operating a draying business and at other work. He was police magistrate several years, a position he held at the time of his death. He was a member of St. Joseph church of Geneva and the Modern Woodmen of America. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, two brothers, one sister, his wife and a daughter, Margurite. He is survived by three sons, Paul of Omaha, Mark of Portland and Roscoe of Onawa, Ia.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10 a. m. at St. Joseph church in Geneva, with Rev. Paul Ulenberg officiating. Pallbearers were Lawrence Doud, LeRoy Miles, John Walter, John Harrington, Carl Schneider and Eric Waltemade. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Nebraska Signal December 31st, 1959 page 7.
