Shores was born December 13, 1925 in Essex, Iowa. He grew up and graduated from high school there. He served with the United States Navy during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific and Philippine liberation from July, 1943, to November, 1946. He lived in Valley for three years and moved to Fremont. He was a locomotive engineer for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad until retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Fremont, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1497, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 200 of Fremont, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 854 of Fremont and American Legion Post No. 20. He married Maxine Byrne October 18, 1947 at Valley. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. He is survived by his wife, Maxine; two sons, James Shores of Blair and Matt Shores of Fort Calhoun; two sisters, Barbara (Mrs. Hugo) Belter of Elkhorn and Betty Boskind of Valley and four grandchildren. A memorial has been established to the Low Income Ministry of Fremont.
