Pettigrew Photographic Gallery, who had photographed VMI's Professor Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson in 1857. On the 1860 Lexington, VA census, I found confectioner James M Pettigrew, 42; Jane Ann, 37; Mary V, 15; Hannah F, 11; Sally H, 8; Charles, 6; Anna J, 4; Samuel G(amble), 2 and Hannah (Gamble) Pettigrew, 70, all VA born. On the 1870 Lexington, VA census, I found confectioner J M Pettigrew, 52; other Pettigrews: Jane Ann, 47; Hannah F, 21; Sallie H, 19; Charles, 17; Anna Jane, 15; Saml Gamble, 12; John Wm, 9; plus baker John Alexander, 21 and house servant Margaret Alexander, 17, all VA born. Native, Jas Wm McClung surveyed and wrote about many Rockbridge Co., VA homes and buildings for the WPA in the mid 1930's. It included the home of Jas M Pettigrew, on Jefferson Street in Lexington ("E. side of Jefferson Street in the block between Washington and Nelson Streets"), report #ROC396. It was a 2 story rectangular home with chimneys on either end, built in about 1825 by James Gold, on the original Borden Land Grant of 1783. Gold deeded it to James on 2 Mar 1855 in Rockbridge Deed Book EE, p 10. After he died his executor and son Samuel sold it to Robert Glasgow and S. C. Campbell on 19 Feb 1919. James and then his son Samuel ran an old fashioned candy store on Main Street, for about for 75 to 80 years. It carried a large selection of kids toys and it was a big hit. The WPA report includes a photograph, though it was a rental property and a bit run down at that time. Husband of J. A. Pettigrew, CSA Marker says: JAMES MADISON PETTIGREW Born May 2, 1818 Departed this life Feb. 25, 1892 Funeral of J. M. Pettigrew. The funeral of Mr. J. M. Pettigrew took place from the Methodist church Saturday morning at eleven o'clock. While the services were in progress, the stores of the town were closed out of respect to the memory of Lexington's oldest merchant. Rev. Prettyman officiated. The pall-bearers were: Messrs. J. W. Haughawaught, C.M. Figgat, Jay Hugh Wills, J. T. McCrum, J. W. Barclay and J. P. Moore. Among the relatives of the deceased present at the funeral were Mrs. C. F. Keys, of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. H. N. Burford and Mrs. L. F. Lucado, of Lynchburg; and Mr. N. M. Varner, of Staunton. The remains were interred in the family plot in the Lexington cemetery.
