Description	:	Joachim (James) Maxfeldt was born March 5, 1840 in Germany. In 1862 he came to Nebraska and homesteaded a farm southwest of Stamford. Here he built a dugout and later a sod house just east of where the frame buildings were later built. His homestead deed is certificate no. 1732 and registered at the land office in Bloomington, Nebraska on May 20, 1862. He went east in the summer to work on building the new railroad. In 1862 he came to Nebraska and homesteaded a farm southwest of Stamford. Here he built a dugout and later a sod house just east of where the frame buildings were later built. His homestead deed is certificate no. 1732 and registered at the land office in Bloomington, Nebraska on May 20, 1862. He went east in the summer to work on building the new railroad. It was here he met Sophia Heitman at Crete, Nebraska. She was born in Germany on October 13, 1844. She and a sister came to America unable to speak English. She made two trips to Germany bringing her parents and two brothers back to Crete. She and James were married and returned to the dugout. Henry, Sophia (Branen), and John were born in the sod house. Both were charter members of the Trinity Lutheran Church which was organized in the school house of District No. 22, which was located just east of their homestead.
