He lived on part of his father's farm in York County until about the year 1780, when on the 19th of April, he bought a farm in Chartiers Twsp, Washington Co, PA near the Washington County Home, containing 233 acres. He married Margaret Paxton. He was a man of small stature; was ordained an elder in the Chartiers Seceder congregation April 17th, 1811 and died Feb. 11th, 1815." From: "The History of Washington Co, PA," by Boyd Crumrine, 1882, pgs 714-715: "James McNary was a son of James McNary, who settled in Hanover Twsp; a brother of John McNary who bought in North Strabane Twsp. He came out to this county before his father, and on the 19th of April, purchased 233 acres of land in Chartiers Twsp, near the County Home. He married Margaret, daughter of Tom Paxton. He was chosen elder of Chartiers United Presbyterian Congregation April 17, 1811, and died in Feb. 1815, leaving 8 children, of whom Samuel married Mary, daughter of Jacob Miller and settled near Hickory; John P. McNary, a son of Samuel, lives about half a mile from Canonsburg, in Chartiers; Jane, a daughter, became the wife of Thomas Forsythe, and resides in Canonsburg." From: "The Clan McNary of the USA," by Joseph Rea McNary, 1914: "Pg. 63: "James McNary, the second son of James the first, was born about the year 1741, probably in Lancaster (now York) County, PA. There is no positive evidence that the older members of the family of our original ancestor, James of Chanceford, were born in America; but what knowledge we have tends to confirm the belief his family were all native-born. Their son, James married Margaret Paxton, and lived on a portion of his father's farm in York County until the year 1780, when, in April of that year, he removed west of the Alleghenies, locating in Wshington County, PA, on a tract lying on Chartiers Creek near the present location of the County Home at Arden on the Chartiers Valley Railroad. He was a man of small stature, was ordained an elder in the Chartiers Associate Congregation, Canonsburg, April 17, 1811; and died Feb. 11, 1815." "James and Margaret (Paxton) McNary, ancestors of the James Branch, were the parents of four children; two sons and two daughters, and the known, or located members of this sept [branch], consists solely of the posterity of the youngest son, Samuel, by name." Since he was active in the Chartiers Associate Congregation of Canonsburg, he is probably buried at Oak Spring Cemetery.
