From: "McNary Family with Tree and History," pg. 79, 1907, Genealogy of the Thomas McNary Branch, by WP McNary and others: "In taking up this part of the genealogical history, the Thomas McNary Branch, we have experienced much difficulty in obtaining accurate and reliable data of some of our early ancestry, but on the whole, we feel the record can be relied upon as correct." "Thomas McNary, son of James, the Scottish pioneer, was born on his father's farm in Chanceford Twsp, York County, PA. The date of his birth we cannot be absolutely certain of, but believe it to have been about 1744. He was married in 1766 to Jennet Robinson in York County, who was born in 1747. We find, by consulting "Spangler's History and Sketches of York County Families" that Thomas McNary was a volunteer in the Revolutionary War, and captain of the 4th Co. of the 4th Battalion of the 'Flying Camp' in 1776, which marched to New Jersey and took part in the Battle of Trenton. Also that one David McNary, brother of Thomas, was a private in this same company commanded by Captain Thomas McNary. It may be a matter of interest to know that David McKinley, grandfather of President William McKinley, was a member of this battalion." "In December, 1782, this same Thomas McNary, following the line of emigration westward, purchased a farm in what is now North Strabane Twsp, Washington Co, PA, of James Allison, 250 acres of land for '375 pounds specie, lawful money of Pennsylvania,' situated on the forks of Shirtee Creek on Sugar Tree Run, bounded by lands of Dorce Penticost, and to a line of said tract run by Henry Taler (Henry Taylor) and lands of John McDall (McDowell). For this tract he received a warrant dated Oct. 29th, 1784, and on the 21st of Feb. 1785, it was surveyed to him as 'Sugar Tree,' and contained 219 acres. This farm was inherited by his son, Mathew, and continued his until his death, when it passed into the possession of John Struthers, and is now owned [in 1904] by Henry Mollenauer." "Thomas McNary was 'a large, fine-looking man' of a robust physique suited to the requirements of pioneer life, such as he was afterwards called on to endure. His church connection was in the Chartiers Seceder or Associate Congregation, Canonsburg, of which he was ordained an elder some time prior to 1799. He continued to reside on his farm until his death, which occurred in 1820, aged about 75 years. His body was interred in what is now known as Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg. In his will, he makes provision for the legal freedom of a servant, 'Jean Parkinson,' who had been practically free for many years before this time." May 15, 1773, Thomas B. 1775, Elizabeth b. 24 Apr 1786, all being born in York Co, PA.-these were handwritten into the book] From: "The History of Washington County, PA," by Boyd Crumrine, pg 873: "Thomas McNary emigrated from York Co, PA in 1782 and on the 30th of Dec. of that year, purchased of James Allison, 250 acres of land 'situate on the forks of Shirtee Creek, on Sugar Tree Run bounded by lands of Dorce Penticost and to a line of said tract run by Hendry Taler [Henry Taylor] and lands of John McDoll [McDowell].' For this tract he received a warrant dated Oct. 29, 1784, and on the 21st Feb, 1785, it was surveyed to him as 'Sugar Tree' and contained 219 acres. He was the son of James McNary of York Co, who settled in Hanover Twsp in 1787. He was elected an elder in Chartiers Church prior to 1799 and remained in that capacity until his death in 1820. His children were Samuel, James, David, Joseph and Matthew. Samuel settled in Jefferson Co, OH; James in Muntown in Nottingham Twsp, where he was an elder in the Pigeon Creek United Presbyterian Church; David in North Strabane, where his sons Samuel and James now reside. Joseph settled in Cecil Twsp near Canonsburg, where his son-in-law, Andrew Griffen now resides. He was elected an elder in Chartiers United Presbyterian Church May 10, 1832. Matthew settled on the old homestead and later sold it to John Struthers. It is now [1882] owned by William Donaldson and James Farris. Matthew was elected as an elder in Chartiers United Presbyterian Church May 21, 1825." Thomas McNerry" of the Flying Camp, York County Associators, previously alluded to in these pages. He married Janet Robinson of York County in 1766. In 1782 or the succeeding year, following the line of emigration westward, he, with all his family, removed to a farm of 219 acres in North Strabane Twsp, Washington Co, PA, which he purchased for '375 pound specie, lawful money of Pennsylvania.' He resided on this farm until his death, which occurred in 1820.
