Description	:	Son of John McQuilling and Mary Magdalena of Somerset Co., Pennsylvania. The parents separated, John started a new family in Clark and Scott Counties, Indiana as evidenced by his probate record there. He lists his children by Mary M. each receiveing fifty cents but the bulk of his property to his new wife and other children: "(April 26, 1836) In the name of God Amen. I, John McQuilling of Scott county Indiana...do make this my last will and testament...My will and desire is that after my death all my just debts be paid and my beloved... I give to my son Peter Forty dollars out of my personal estate and all my real estate except one Hundred Dollars, which I give to my daughter Eliza Ann and the balance of my personal estate be equally divided between my son Peter and my daughter Eliza Ann. In consideration of the legacy that I have bequeathed to my son Peter my will and desire is that he maintain my son Absalom during his (Absalom's) natural life. Be it here distinctly understood that, should my wife marry after my death, then in that case my will is that she have only one third of my estate. And should my son Absalom die before his and my wife then my son Peter and my daughter Eliza Ann share equally the legacies aforesaid that I have bequeathed to them. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 26th day of April 1836. In presence of Preston B. Robinson and Arthur Watts. [signed/sealed] John McQuilling." (Scott Co. Deed Record Vol F p. 40 No. 34). Said father died in 1837 in Scott Co., Indiana. James McQuilling died in Fulton County, without children. He left his estate to his widow Harriet Zeigler McQuilling and to his siblings: "The following persons are the heirs having the next estate of inheritance... namely, John McQuilling, Jacob McQuilling, David McQuilling, Polly Tom intermarried with David Tom, Hannah Zimmerman intermarried with John Zimmerman, Rachel Cline [Kline] intermarried with Adam Cline [Kline], Delilah Heiple intermarried with Jonathan Heiple, Nancy Cunningham intermarried with James Cunningham, Julia Ann Zimmerman intermarried with Daniel Zimmerman and Betsy Shafer who's husband is said to be deceased." Ohio Chancery Records Vol 1 p 75-80) Note: James' brother, Samuel McQuilling died Sept. 6, 1850 and is not included in the will. One sister Catherine is also not named (nor is she named in her father's probate). Her baptism record: Catherine MacQuilling born in Brothers Valley Twp., Bedford Co, PA to John MacQuilling & Mary Magdalena, baptized in the Reformed Evangelical Church; witness: Anna Maria Bauman (Saylor, Church Records of Berlin, Somerset Co., PA, by translated from German Vol 1 p. 49) Mary Magdalena McQuilling, mother of James, was described in a biographical sketch of one of her grandchildren, Adam Kline McQuilling - 1901 "The paternal grandmother of our subject was born in America, of German perentage, about 1765 and died in Delta, Ohio in 1839." She is on Somerset Co., PA 1810 and 1820 Census records as head of household. In 1830, she lived in Wayne Co., next door to her daughters Hannah Zimmerman and Mary Tom: ("Mary McWilling 1 female age 60-70", "John Simmerman", "David Tom", Paint Twp., Wayne Co., Ohio)
