Description	:	John McQuilling was born in Somerset Co., Pennsylvania to John McQuilling and Mary Magdalena. He eloped with his wife, Sarah, whose family was opposed to her marrying a "greasy mechanic." Their marriage was performed ca 1816 and a son, John, was born in 1818 in Somerset County. A newspaper biographical sketch of son, William, states that the family moved from Somerset to Ohio ca 1831 and settled in the part of Richland county which was later included in Ashland county. He eloped with his wife, Sarah, whose family was opposed to her marrying a "greasy mechanic." Their marriage was performed ca 1816 and a son, John, was born in 1818 in Somerset County. A newspaper biographical sketch of son, William, states that the family moved from Somerset to Ohio ca 1831 and settled in the part of Richland county which was later included in Ashland county. He purchased land in Vermillion Twp. in 1834. In 1837 he leased a parcel adjacent to his land and an excerpt of the agreement follows: "...John McQuillin doth hereby covenant and promise to clear and put under good fences in fields of from five to ten acres and not more than two fields to contain 10 acres...said McQuillin to put up a cabin house and cabin barn near the spring... Said McQuillin not to cut any timber...except on the 60 acres which he is to clear and to have the privilege of seeding down 1/2 of said 60 acres in the fall of 1845 with the privilege of taking off his grain in the harvest of 1846, said McQuillin to clear and fence and till said land in a husband like manner and quietly yeild up peaceable possession...at the expiration of said term. Lease Agreement Nov 1838 to Nov 1845." (Ashland Co., Ohio Deeds, Book E p. 13) In Somerset County, Pennsylvania records, the family name was "McQuilling". Like others of his siblings, John's family dropped the "g" and changed the spelling to "McQuillin". Early Pennsylvania tax records and the 1850 Ohio federal census record state John McQuilling was a blacksmith. Farming was his stated profession from 1860 on. John is buried beside his wife in Synagogue-Church of God Cemetery in Vermillion Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio. His grave marker is broken and leaning against Sarah's marker. Grave marker inscriptions: "John McQuillin 7 Apr 1793 - 11 Nov 1880" & "Sarah wife of John McQuillin died Mar. 30, 1871 ae 74y 11m"
