Last accounts received of his condition were so assuring that his son and daughters were confident that he was well and enjoying that genial climate, indeed, only a short time after the receipt of the telegram a letter, written by him the Monday previous, was received and told of his general good health and usual spirits. Read More	Dec 10, 1902 - Carroll Sentinel - Children of James Murphy were shocked last Thursday to receive a telegram announcing his deatb at his winter quarters in San Diego, California. Last accounts received of his condition were so assuring that his son and daughters were confident that he was well and enjoying that genial climate, indeed, only a short time after the receipt of the telegram a letter, written by him the Monday previous, was received and told of his general good health and usual spirits. The end evidently came, as it usually doea, at an unexpected time. The deceased was in his 70th year and was native of the state of Illinois, However, he came to Carroll county in 1876 and settled on a farm a few miles west of Carroll in Arcadia township. As the years went by he prospered till he gained a competency that emitted him to spend his latter years in comfort. Of late years he and his good wife have been spending their winters in the genial climate of southern California and each spring returned to their home happy with their experiences. Last spring Mrs. Murphy died after a very brief illness. The bereaved husband spent the summer in loneliess and seemed glad when autumn came and he could leave for the coast. He wanted change, anything to break the monotony of his loneliness. The day he left he called for final handshake with the writer, and when told that we hoped to see him again brighter in spirit and vigorous in body, he replied, 'God only knows." James Murphy was a specimen of perfect physical manhood and in his prime was a handsome man. He was an excellent citizen and those who knew him best, admired him most. Of late years he became a loyal friend to the editor of this paper, and though we had but few views in common and the disparity of age was marked, the friendship was reciprocal. We liked his great rugged strength and inflexibility. Such strong men give character to our citizenship. The deceased is survived by seven children: Michael, John and James; and the daughters, the wives of Wm. Cooney, James Fitzenery, W. Egan, and John Egan. The remains are expected this afternoon or tonight and the funeral will be held tomorrow forenoon at 10 o'clock at St. Joseph's church.
