Born in Dixon, Illinois March 13, 1870, he came to Carroll with his parents, James and Julia Drew Murphy, in 1978. His father bought the farm which is now the O.J. Murphy home and one-half miles west of Carroll. The family lived on this farm for many years. At the time they settled then, Arcadia was a larger town than Carroll. Mr. Murphy had recalled the early days when covered wagons passed the farm on trails, as there were no roads or fences. He also remembered Indians from Nebraska going past to visit the Indians in Tama. His marriage to Margaret Floyd of the Beulah district took place Sept 18, 1900, at Fonda. They lived on the home farm west of Carroll until about 25 years ago, when Mr. Murphy bought the farm near Lohrville, which the family home Mr. and Mrs. Murphy celebrated their golden wedding anniversary two years ago. Surviving Mr. Murphy are his widow; two sons, O.J., Carroll; and William, Lohrville; two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Mary) McGinty, who has been living with her parents since the death of her husband; and Ethel, who is also at home. There are seven grandchildren. Mr. Murphy was the last of a family of seven children. Two brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
