His father died when James was eight years of age. He was the last survivor of the family of three brothers and two sisters, John Morrison, Samuel Pressley, Robert Steward, Paulina Taylor Dunlap and Elizabeth Taylor Coleman. Read More	TAYLOR, JAMES NEWTON — James newton Taylor was born at Cherryford, Adams county, Ohio, September 30, 1850. He was the second son of John Taylor and Mary Wright Taylor. His father died when James was eight years of age. He was the last survivor of the family of three brothers and two sisters, John Morrison, Samuel Pressley, Robert Steward, Paulina Taylor Dunlap and Elizabeth Taylor Coleman. Mr. Taylor and his brothers and sisters attended school in a log framed building with benches for seats. There was a tradition in his family that he was of studious habits and good deportment in the years he attended school. His parents were farmers in the Ohio locality. The richness of its soil later recommended eastern Nebraska for his pioneering. At the age of twenty-one he became a member of the United Presbyterian church at North Liberty, O., as a member of whom he lent his support and attachment till the day of his death. However, while his health permitted, he was a frequent attendant and generous supporter of the Methodist Episcopal church at Geneva. His ancestors were from Scotland, first coming to this country more than a century ago. He inherited many of the sterling virtues and qualities of the Scottish race, long and deservedly noted for being God-fearing, industrious, thrifty and provident people. He inherited little of this world's goods, but early in life he started an independent business that of hotel keeper, continuing it a couple of years, in which he prospered in a limited way, enough so that he obtained the first means of attaching himself to the soil and made farming in Ohio and later in Nebraska, his primary business, in which from year to year he prospered moderately, so that at the end of his career he had much of lands and this world's goods honorably acquired and safely invested. In 1880 he came to Nebraska; where he purchased a small farm in Lancaster county hear the town of Greenwood. In 1892 he purchased a half section of land five miles northeast of Geneva, where he established on one of Fillmore county's highest eminences, a farm home and extensive buildings and improvements, which as the years came and went, with his four stalwart and devoted sons and one daughter, a happy home was maintained for all of the family until he moved to Geneva, into the comfortable home where he and his affectionate wife and devoted daughter lived until his demise, which was July 14, 1939. His own home history began with his marriage to Margaret Helmly on the 12th day of December, 1872. The results of this happy union were six children: The first born, a son, dying in early infancy, Charles Nelson; Ira Nerigl; Daisy Lillian, Herbert, who died February 19, 1920; and George Edwin. He leaves six grandsons, James, Robert and Herbert, sons of Herbert Taylor, and John, Kenneth, and Donald, sons of George Taylor. Mr. Taylor was a distant relative of General Zachary Taylor of Mexican war fame, and afterwards for a brief period, the president of the United States. The Taylor's, living near the Ohio River, were strong Union people. John Morrison Taylor, at about the age of thirteen, enlisted in the Union Army and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. Mr. Taylor always took an active part in the public affairs of his community and country, and was a consistent member of the political party of his choice. At the time of his death, he was one of three surviving members of the Fillmore county board of supervisors under whose administration our courthouse was built. It was a recognized model as a public structure, and was perhaps the most economically built courthouse in the state of Nebraska. The other two surviving members are Peter Keenan of Grafton and Joseph P. Moor of Ohiowa. In public and private life he was liberal and enterprising, but he adhered to the policy of avoiding debt, and he paid as he or the public he represented that which legitimate progress dictated. He was an affectionate husband and father, a good and honorable citizen, a faithful public servant and a God-fearing man. The funeral service was held at the Geneva Methodist church at 2:30 p. m.
