Mr. Graham was born November 14, 1855, in Washington County, Iowa. When he was 10 years old he moved with his father to Freeman, Mo. When a young man he left Freeman for Harper, where he went into the newspaper business with his brother, W. O. Graham. Together they published the Harper County Times. Mr. Graham was also postmaster at Harper for six years. He then moved to Turon where he established his own newspaper. He left Turon after a year and established a paper at Norwich. At Harper, Mr. Graham married Miss Eva Francis, who died in 1898. Later he married his first wife's sister, Miss Etta B. Francis. A daughter was born to the first marriage, Mrs. Madge Greene, who lives at Inglewood, Calif. A son, born of the second marriage, is Francis C. Graham, of Mt. Harris, Colo. Mr. Graham came to Emporia in 1894 from Norwich, where for six years he had been editor of the Norwich News. He quit the newspaper business when he left Norwich, and here he established the coal, wood and feed business on the northeast corner of Seventh and Commercial. A large part of Mr. Graham's business was delivering coal in small amounts to Normal students. After six years on the Seventh Avenue location, Mr. Graham moved to the lot at 819 Commercial. At about the same time he dropped the feed department and dealt only in coal and wood. Mr. Graham served three years as a city councilman in Emporia. He served one term, and half of another, the second term being cut short by the establishment of the city commission form of government. He retired from the coal business in July, 1940. His retirement ended one of the oldest businesses in Emporia and Mr. Graham was believed to be the oldest in years of any active business man on Commercial Street at the time of his retirement. Surviving are his wife of the home, 813 Market; one daughter, Mrs. Madge Greene, of Inglewood, Calif.; one son, Francis C. Graham, of Mt. Harris, Colo., and three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
