Kershner, 89, died in the loving arms of his family on Nov. 9, 2003, at his residence in Green Valley, Ariz. He was born Sept. 9, 1914, in Bates County, Mo. When he was 3, his family traveled by covered wagon to homestead in western Kansas. Growing up, he walked or rode a horse 1 1/2 miles to attend a one room rural school. His thirst for knowledge and self-betterment was such that he provided for himself and worked his way through high school and college. At Garfield High School in Kansas, he played football, basketball and tennis. He was also active in dramatics and speech, and sang in the boys' quartet and glee club. He then enrolled at Fort Hays State College, where he received his bachelor of science degree in education. While attending Fort Hays State, he was active in student affairs, serving on the student council, as a member of the 7th Cavalry, and in the boys' glee club. His stature and popularity with his fellow students was reflected by his election, during his senior year, as president of the student body. In college, his primary extracurricular activities were in speech and debate. In his senior year, he won the State Oratorical contest, and he and his debate partner were second in the National Debate Tournament. That same year he married the love of his life, Helen Aletha Fell. From his humble beginnings, his drive, courage and passion led to a successful and distinguished business career. He served as an educator and taught in Kansas schools at Brewster, Sterling, Larned, Salina and Topeka. During World War II, he worked on arbitration cases for Douglas Aircraft and taught at Tulsa University. In 1947, he entered the life insurance industry, which was his profession until retirement. This caring man always enriched his communities with public service and civic endeavors. He was a March of Dimes and Community Chest chairman, taught Sunday school, was an elder in his church and served on numerous committees and boards. Also, he was honored to serve as the Kansas State Jaycees president. Likewise, he gave to and was recognized by his chosen profession. The esteem and regard with which he was held by his peers and colleagues were reflected by the honors bestowed upon him, including his election as president of the Kansas State Association of Life Underwriters. He became a recognized and sought-after public speaker, and he also taught life insurance courses at Kansas State University and speech outreach courses for The University of Kansas. This was a refined man who never forgot or forsook the simple, traditional values which sustained him. He believed in "just doing right." The most important thing in his life was his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Helen; his sons who worshipped him, Gary (Carolee), Tubac, Ariz., and Craig (Pat), Dighton, Kan.; his adoring grandchildren, Leigh (Mark), Derek, Casey, Aubrey, Nicole, Jason and Sara; two wonderful great-granddaughters, Jessica and Ashley; and five sisters-in-law, Gladine Rosebrook, Phyllis Fell, Elma Kershner, Sarah Kershner and Leona Cane. His three brothers predeceased him, but he is survived by numerous nephews and nieces. Jim was a great role model for all his descendants, both in word and deed. This gentle but deep man was a writer, an avid reader and took special pleasure in hunting, golfing, hiking and fishing. A memorial service for his local friends was held Nov. 14 at the Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, 17750 S. La Canada, in Green Valley, Ariz., 85614. Remembrances may be made to the church, or to Odyssey Healthcare of Tucson, 1730 East River Road, Tucson Ariz., 85718. The family would like to express a special thank you to the caring and meaningful hospice care provided by Odyssey. A fitting tribute to this remarkable person will be held in Kansas at a later date. The greatest gift we ever had, came from Heaven, and we called him Dad. A special man has gone to a special place.
