Stephens Resided in Butler County for Many Years Passing of one of the early settlers of Butler county is chronicled in the death of James P. Stephens, an uncle of Mrs. Roy Coe, of David City, near Witten, S. Dak., on Saturday, Oct. 21, in his 89th year. His death was due to his advanced age, and he had been bedfast for several months, cared for at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Effie G. Taylor, by Mrs. Taylor and her brother, Harrie Stephens, of Manville, Wyo., who had been with his father since August. Mr. Stephens was born in New York state April 27, 1833, going to Wisconsin when a boy. His marriage took place in Wisconsin March 13, 1856. Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Stephens moved to Iowa and lived there until 1871, when they came to Nebraska and Butler county, homesteading land southwest of David City where Foley now is. Mrs. Stephens passed away on January 20, 1888, and since her death Mr. Stephens had resided with his children. Surviving Mr. Stephens are the son, Harrie, and daughters, Mrs. Taylor, a daughter, Mrs. Carrie Ogden, of Horton, Kas., a sister, Mrs. B. A. Churchill, living in Imperial, Calif., and 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Becoming a member of the Baptist church when a young man, Mr. Stephens lived a consistent Christian life, filled with good deeds and kindness to all. He was a strictly temperate man. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge. The body of Mr. Stephens arrived in David City Wednesday evening and funeral services were held in the Baptist church at 10 o'clock this Thursday morning. Rev. J. R. Hoy had charge of the services. A quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Haight, Mrs. T. J. Hinds and H. L. Boston sang "Nearer My God to Thee," "Sun of My Soul," and "Abide With Me." The pallbearers were W. E. Ball, George Ball, Ben Brown, George McKnight, Irvin McKnight and Herbert Treadway. Burial was in the David City cemetery by side of the grave of Mrs. Stephens. `````````````````` People's Banner (David City, Nebr.), November 3, 1921, p. 2, col. 5&6 DEATH OF FORMER RESIDENT News came Monday that the body of James P. Stephens, an uncle of Mrs. Roy Coe of this city, and a former resident of this place, would be brought here for burial Wednesday. Funeral services were held this Thursday morning at 10 o'clock from the Baptist church, Rev. J. R. Hoy officiating. The pall bearers were Ben Brown, W. E. Ball, George and Irvin McKnight and H. D. Treadway. The songs, "Nearer My God to Thee," "Sun of My Soul" and "Abide With Me" were sung by a mixed quartette consisting of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Haight, Mrs. T. J. Hinds and H. L. Boston. James P. Stephens was born on April 27, 1833 in New York State and died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Effie Taylor of Witten, South Dakota, on Saturday, October 29, 1921, being bedfast for several months, at the ripe old age of 88 years. He was married on March 13, 1856 to Miss Esther Martin in Wisconsin. To this union were born three children who survive him. They came to Butler County in 1871 and homesteaded near David City. Mrs. Stephens preceded him to the other world January 20, 1888. Since her death he has made his home with his children. Those left to mourn his death are his two daughters, Mrs. Carrie Ogden of Horton, Kansas, and Mrs. Effie Taylor of Witten, South Dakota, one son Harry Stephens of Manville, Wyoming, and one sister, Mrs. B. A. Churchill who is Mrs. Roy Coe's mother. He was laid to rest in the David City cemetery beside the remains of his wife. Those from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Foster Taylor of Tripp County, South Dakota; Harry Stephens of Manville, Wyoming; Ira and Ernest Stephens of Armour, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. William Ogden of Horton, Kansas; Mrs. Marrion of Seward; Mrs. Ball and sons Charles and Clarence of Elgin, Nebraska; Mrs. Clara Arnold of Elgin and Elmer Martin of Arnold.
