Read More	James Peter "Jim" McGowan was born in Oregon, Wisconsin on April 11, 1877, the second youngest of 13 children born to Irish immigrants Patrick McGowan and Catherine (Kivlin) McGowan. He attended Story Town School in rural Dane County, Wisconsin. On December 1, 1898, Jim married Ella Agnes "Nell" Molloy in Britt, Iowa. She was born in Verona, Wisconsin and had moved to Britt with her parents, Peter and Bridget (Hurley) Molloy, just four months prior to the wedding. Following their marriage, Jim and Nell returned to Wisconsin and farmed southwest of Oregon, Wisconsin on his mother's farm, until it was sold at auction on January 22, 1901. Jim's mother and sisters, Elizabeth and Agnes, were also living on the farm at the time. Jim and Nell then moved to Britt a few weeks later with their 1 1/2 year-old son, James Arthur "Art". Sons Claude and Francis "Jake" were born at Britt, before the family relocated to a farm two miles straight north of McCool Junction, Nebraska in 1906. The 80-acre farm occupied the west half of the southwest quarter of Section 6 in McFadden Township of York County (about 3.5 miles south of present day Interstate 80 on the east side of highway 81). Two daughters were born in Nebraska. Ethel Cecilia, who died shortly before her second birthday, was followed by Mary Cecilia "Sis". Jim was an excellent fiddler, and while in Wisconsin had been known as the "Story Town Fiddler." He was always in great demand to perform at local dances, and when radio stations began operating in the 1920s, his tunes could be heard over the air waves. He won numerous first prizes for the best fiddler at old time music contests and performed at Henry Field's Station (KFNF) at Clarinda, Iowa, the fair in Des Moines, WOW Radio in Omaha, etc. He was in apparent good health, but on the day of his son Jake's marriage to Celestine Gerlits in York, Nebraska on July 27, 1927, Jim complained of feeling ill following the ceremony. He returned to his farm home, and at about 10 a.m. suffered a stroke. He died a half hour later. Jim is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery east of York.
